I am so DONE

    Ok....

I am thoroughly frustrated. What could cause my JEEP to be way off timing specs (5 BTDC) with points and run well enough (some hesitation). When I throw the petronix in there it throws the timing out even further. I put another distro. in and had the same issue. And yes timing ccw 1-3-4-2. I am gonna check compression next for my own edification.

I think I need to fix this timing issue before I try the petronix again.

    With NEW points and condenser:

My rotor is pointed to number 1 which is between the 6 and 7 o'clock postion on the cap. I can time it and it is about 1/2 inch left (prior)of the 5 degree BTDC mark.

    With Petronix

I have to move all cap wires one position clockwise (my number 1 plug wire to the 7-8 oclock postion on the cap and all others likewise in succession). Then I can start it but can not effectively time the engine.

What gives. I am about ready to buy a crated 4.3 (need more info) I saw on another forum that is ready to bolt up to the T-90 I am so DONE.

Could it just be the oil pump is off and what is the easiest way to fix this. Just loosen the pump and rotate it a bit? Instead of the whole task in the FSM.

Also I have had to adjust my timing three times since I have had my Jeep. I chalked this up to my distro. shaft wearing (I am waiting for my new one to come in). What else could be going wrong to cause my timing problem.

Thanks for the help in advance and apologize for the length of this post.

Kevin I think ( not sure though) that there are two different Pertronix for the F Head.
That could be the source of the problem.
Have you double checked the #s on the setup?

    Yes

1584 for an IAY distro. The mounting plate and all is right. I have it fitting right, now.

Sounds like the oil pump may be off by a tooth. It is a tedious process sometimes to get it set up correctly, but it's not all that difficult. The FSM pretty much spells it out.

Kevin I may be wrong but I thought #1 was suppose to point at 5 o'clock.

when I got mine it was 180 degrees out and #1 was pointing at 11 o'clock, still ran pretty good but found out the oil pump was off a few teeth. Don't give up hope yet.

You can't just turn the oil pump, you have to pull it out and do it like the FSM says. If you don't do that I don't think you should even try to time it with a light, you might do better by trial and error. Just get it to run and start good and not overheat.

I agree with this. Sounds like you need to move the pump over a few teeth. Good luck, and keep the faith.

    Thanks

I was hoping not too, but I agree about the pump too. Man, just wasn't ready for that. Well, I guess it will sit for another month:cry:
