:? hi im posting this for my cousins 74 cj5
heres the problem the damn battery keeps on going dead.
we replaced the alternator and the battery, there is a amp light on the dash that stays on all the time, even if the key is out. can anyone tell me what this amp light is for. can it be the voltage regulator. even if he drives it for a hr. parks it for a bit, the battery drains(and we tried it with other batteries) it wont start.
    thanks

A bad voltage regulator can do it, as can a bad connection. Teh best way to track it down is to turn everything off, and with an ammmeter in the main battery circuit, pull one fuse at a time until the load disappears. That is the bad circuit. If you have access to an oscilloscope, you can also look at the AC waveform right at the battery terminals while running to see if there is a shorted diode in the rectifier circuit.

I had the same problem! My 74 was wired as a 72/73. You probably have the motorola alternator, external voltage regulator, starter relay? When the motor is running and you pull the battery cable off it dies?
