Well... It's starting to be that time again... JEEP SEASON!!!!

I decided to try to figure out what was causing my smoking situation in my jeep (buick 198 V6). It was starting to get unbearable on the trail... I could only count soo many flying purple elephants before I got a headache while smelling the fumes;)

I decided to check it out without pulling the whole engine. The crank, cam and all internal bearings only had about 300 miles on them, so I didn't want to "disturb" them. So I decided to work on it within the jeep.

I ended up pulling the heads off and pulling the pistons. To my suprise, I indeed broke 3 rings!!! One in cylinder 4, 5, and 6. I caught it intime and my cylinder walls aren't scored or out of round. Actually, the bore on the worst one is only .004" off of standard, well within the tolerance!!

I have a guy ordering the rings today. Nobody makes or carries the 198 rings anymore, so we have to get the buick 215 V8 rings and install them. Also, nobody makes the head gasket kit.. I have to get the whole kit. Oh well, better than nothing;)

I have a whole list of items to tackle for my jeep. This is the first of many, and hopefully my engine will be back together next weekend!!

I was hoping to track you through Tioga county trails by following the smoke trail... :D

Sounds good Drew. Did Dave get the Mog back together?
Does Gary's Superhauler (CJ6) have 4-wheel steering yet?
    Anything else new?

    BTW, I posted a pic of John's old A1 today... :)

I'm planning to flat-tow this time, should be a more comfortable ride :)

Keep us posted on the engine.

    Where've you been?? You're grounded. J/k, welcome back. :D

Any chance you've looked at Kanter's website? If I'm reading it right, it looks like the 198 ring set is $80:

I saw that a while ago and lost the bookmark. Thank you!! We'll see what price these other ones come in at.. the guy that we get these kind of parts from (hard to find) is pretty good with low $$$.

Lynn... that's right, no more smoke signals this year.
    - Little smoke ahead of trail = flat, easy going
    - Lots of smoke = technical
    - A whole lot of smoke = stuck, but not stuck enough.. keep on trying!!

Gary has the 4-wheel steer box made, but until we start riding again, his motivation isn't quite enough to keep going right now. Hopefully by the fall it will be in the de-bug stage. Pics will soon be taken as progess comes.

Dave (Mog man) has been down south all winter long. As far as I know, the mog is in the same place as where it was last fall, broken. I doubt that he will make it this spring.

As far as my jeep goes, my goals are to have the following done by spring jeep camp:

-I'm starting to fab up some 1x1 tube steel doors for the 5.
-Wrap diamond plate on the rear corners (corners currently bent from a "demolition derby" incident with "Happy" Gary at last years jeep camp.
    -Diamond plate the floors
-Install hanging pedals and a brake booster.
-Fab a roof center console for my CB (like yours)
-Try to fab in power steering. (low on my list right now, time is an issue)

After all that's done, I'll be sure to break everything on the jeep at the mud bog and end up rebuilding everything the week before we go down to PA;)

If you look at Kanter's pricelist, the 215 V8 ring set is $64.00, and the 198 V6 rings are $80.00.

WHY!!! WHY!!! (me banging my head on my table) WHY!!!

They are the same freaking rings, but you get 2 cylinders of rings more for $16.00 less!!

I run into this all the time. I expecially LOVE it when you can get the same part (same part number!!) for two totally different vehicles for two completely different prices!!!

I hear that shopping around is beneficial, but just WHY! WHY! WHY!!!!

    That's a good one.

I like it when I call up the parts store for something like lug nuts and they ask me if my vehicle has airconditioning or a luggage rack.

I'll need to make about 4 copies of that sign. Everywhere I'm near a phone.

Over the weekend, we slapped all the parts in and got the jeep running. Took about 3 hours to do it, about 1.5 hours of actual working time.

It sounds good and doesn't smoke. It smoked just a tad to burn off the oil that we put on top of the cylinders.

Getting new wires and putting new points on wednesday, and I'm starting to fab up my "Jeep Bling".

    Later.
