Wascally Wiring

    Hi Guys,

    I'm still trying to salvage my PO's bad wiring job. :mad: I've got the turn signals working, but when I push the break it overides them. For example, I'm crusing up to a left turn lane and put on the signal and its working fine; then i push the break and not only do my break lights light up, but so do the front turn signals.

    Is this just a grounding problem? I've been chasing wires with my test bulb and can't figure it out. The PO had a painless kit put in.

    Can't help you much remotely if it's not stock. About all you can do is divide and conquer - use a good DMM. Get some long pieces of wire and add clips to each end. Use that to jump around the body ground (bulb socket back to the battery ground) to test the grounds. The turn signal switches are also troublesome.

    Make sure grounds are good everywhere - even when a circut doesn't seem related to the one your working with.

    The brake light circuit ties into the turn signal switch for its power source. Is this how you have yours wired? I've seen this problem when guys try to wire the brake lights independently of the turn signals. The TS switch is what makes it all cohabitate happily. ;)

    I had some similar problems. It was caused by the plug that connects the rear wiring to the fuse box. After cleaning up the connection, all problems went away. (Of course, I decided to rewire and recrimp EVERYTHING in the a$$ end of my Jeep first, before checking to obvious...)

    I was reading what everyone wrote about how the brake light should be wired into the turn signal, and that reminded me of a problem I am having. I just got a 72 CJ5, and I quickly realized that the brake lights are controlled by a toggle switch on the dash. I could not figure out any reason for the previous owner to have done this, but now it might make sense... The jeep doesnt have the turn signal switch anymore, im guessing it stopped working long ago or just broke so they trashed it. Could they have just decided to run the brakes through a toggle switch instead of installing a new turn signal switch? And can I just wire the brake lights into an aftermarket turn signal assembly to get power like you all are speaking of? Because as of right now, you have to flip a switch to get the brake lights to come on, and I cant figure out how I am going to wire it to come on when I hit the peddle...

    Sooner - I am no expert......but it sounds like you need to find your brake light switch(stock one) or buy one and install it. Then move the wires from the toggle switch to the brake light switch.

    I bought a after market turn signal switch bracket and wired direct with hazards.:beer:

    Well I know next to nothing about wiring, so any help with this would be appreciated. If I buy the brake light switch, I will just be able to take the wiring that runs to the toggle switch and hook it into the brake light switch? Does this tie into the peddle in any way? I just dont see how it will read when I hit the brake pedal, to turn on... and I plan on wiring in a signal stat turn signal unit, so how will that connect into it, or will it at all? Thanks!

    Sooner - Here is a picture of my switch. (circled in yellow) I have a 1970.....not sure what type of switch you would have. Someone correct me if I am wrong.....but yes you should be able to transfer your wires from the toggle switch to the brake switch. The switch I have is a hydraulic switch. When the brake pedal is pushed...pressure in the brake line actuates the switch turning on the brake lights just as you would with the toggle switch. Hope this helps - Tim

    Sooner, I think Painless has their installation manuals on their site (?) That should contain a well-drawn wiring diagram that would be a good model to work from.
