Gas Tank Repair

Ok, I got 3 gas tanks. One that goes under the drivers seat. one that goes under the passenger seat (they are both the same), and one that some guy installedin the back with a skid plate because it holds alot more then 10 gallons. My original plan was to just throw one under the drivers seat to keep it simple for now until i get more things out of the way. The two "under the seat" gas tanks are pretty badly worn tho. On one, the bottom is real rusty and has rusted through in a few spots. Looks like someone with some skills on a mig should cut the bottom off and weld in a new sheet. on the other gas tank, there are cracks in the seams. It looks like they patched it with bondo and it worked for a while, but needs to be redone. I'm thinking the way to go is to take the second tank with cracks, and patch it. I've seen two different kinds of patch kits for gas tanks. one is like a material that you cover the holes/cracks with, then it turns hard like metal in a few hours. the other is a putty. I'm thinking the putty cause its a crack on a seam, but does anyone have any experience with either of these and which ones work good? or any other ideas of what i should do? Am i gonna quickly realize 10 gallon gas tanks suck and wish I had just installled the aftermarket one in the first place? Opinions? Thanks guys. By the way, I got here running and she sounds sweet. Fires up quicker then any vehicle I have ever owned and sounds like a mustang or somethin.

I have a newer 10 gal. under seat tank in mine and would love to have more capacity.

you might consider and be a candidate for a custom full across-the-front
tank. I have seen these, mostly in flatties though.
One tank all the way across, under the seats, with fillers on either side; doesn't matter which pump you pull up to.
that gives you somewhere between 25-30 gallons, maybe more in a A1 or 5

 

I would like to see one of those............never heard of those.

Yeah, I'd get a plastic driver's side under seat tank, then leave the rear tank for later. You'll be days and dollars ahead in the long run.

Yea, I looked at the tanks closer, they both look like alot of work. I really want to keep the classic design, but i think the 3rd rear tank is in perfect condition. you guys are right, I'm just gonna install that, then maybe buy a new tank later. Is it common for old cj's to be upgraded to the aftermarket tanks under the rear? I was kinda thinking it was a sin...

I had to do the points and fix some corroded terminals. got the spark, then put the cap on wrong that was hurdle i never did get the ballast resistor to output 9 v tho instead of 12

 

I went with Tank Renu. Kept original my original 50's underseat tank & senders.
Lifetime warranty, less than 200, but a NOS underseat M38A1 is 400.
