I have a curiosity question here. I here lots of talk about distributors, perstolite etc. How many did Jeep use in its run? Does anyone know what the different ones were called? I.E. duraspark. Whats the stock brand for a 74 (points ignition).

i believe the 74 points type ignition is a delco... in the 'old' days used to run accel points to prevent bounce... helps at 5k+ :)

then, 'bout the only electronic common was mopar...

I think Jeep used a points distributor up to 74 when they switched to the ford motorcraft ignition.

'74 was the first year for electronic ignition, and from '74 through '77 Jeep used the Prestolite system. In 1978, Jeep switched to the more reliable Ford electronic system, usually called DuraSpark. The DuraSpark comes in two grades, regular and premium, with the premium using the TFI (thin film integration) coil and different cap, rotor and wires. Regular used the usual oilcan coil and conventional looking cap, rotor and wires. I don't know if DuraSpark refers to the regular or premium parts, but Jeep always used the regular parts. If you have the Ford system, you can upgrade by simply buying a new coil cap, rotor and wires. There's plenty on the web about this.

I think 75 was the first year. Unless it was very very late 74 because every 74 I've ever seen is points. I've owned 3 personally. But all the 75's I've seen are electronic.

for the cj's, '75 was the first year with the electronic.

may have been earlier for non-cj's. :?

'75 is most likely right ... I've only owned a '73 and a '75. I know that we stocked the parts for Prestolite EE long before I owned my Jeep, but that could have been for the first of the '75 model year.
