In a couple of weeks, my seats are going to the upholstery shop to be rebuilt/recovered. I've seen an example of the stock seat pattern on the Earlycj5.com banner (red jeep, v-6). Does anyone have pics showing front, back, side views or possibly dimensions of the trim panels and horizontal bars (I don't know what to call them:oops: ) on the seats. I'd like to take the pics with me, so the guy can have something to go by. The upholstery on the seats now are nowhere near original and I really like the look of the stock seats. Sparky, do you have good pics of the jeeps shown on the banners?

Exactly :) - Extra nice - got more pics?
If you don't mind me asking - what'd they cost? The local guy estimated $300 - 350/pair.

You may want to contact www.smsautofabrics.com and ask for a free sample. I did that and it got to my house in about a week. The original pinstripe apholstery (in mine) was black/ white alternating and 1/4" (I believe) wide... I say "believe" because I wound up going with the same style as Billy showed in his pic, and I can't find my sample.

Beachwood Canvas has recovering kits for those seats, ready to install, but they recommend you have an auto upholstery place put them on. I'm assuming you have the seats with the one-piece frames and the built-in springs, like this?

Dan, if I'm understanding your post correctly I don't believe the seat pattern you're referring to is correct for the seat frames in use in '62, I think it's the later style seats ('64 up?) that you're thinking of with the horizontal bar pattern. A covering kit or pattern for one of those ain'tagonna fit the older one piece frame (if thats what you have).

Here's a pic of the one piecers I bought for Tonka- (ignore the mounts in front, they're for the later style seats)

I've actually got the vinyl stripped off these now, I can lay the pieces out on the grid board & take a pic if you'd like but I won't guarantee that the results will be good enough to use as a pattern.

More pics of the stripped seats here-

In addition to the vinyl we'll be replacing the padding as well, 50+ years and an indigent squirrel have taken thier toll.

Howard - You're right - I'm thinking of the seats with horizontal bars. I thought that was stock, but looks like I'm off. I really do want the seats to look like the ones shown in Rondog and w3srl pics. Thanks everyone for the pictures and info. I believe I now have enough info for the uphostery guy.
    -Don

Rondog - those are the ones!

Actually, looking at Steve's seats it looks like he has the one piece frames. If you find a source for the "bar" covers (Steve, are you listen- er, um- "Reading"?) that fit the one piecers let me know as I prefer that design as well:) .

I believe that photo that Steve posted is of Blevisay's (Billy) Jeep, "Animal", isn't it? One-piece frames nonetheless. And those covers are available from Beachwood Canvas. Don't know about the patterns.

As far as those other frames on the floor in Howard's post (post #8), aren't those the frames that Bestop makes replacement buckets to fit?

Ron - the one piece frames are what I've got, don't know about the others Howard shows in front of the green vinyl seats. The pics of the covers you show came from Beachwood Canvas? Do you have the part # and price you gave?

No no no...those are some beater seats that I bought, those ARE NOT covers from Beachwood! I plan on getting cover kits from them for my seats when I get to that point, but I haven't bought them yet.

Go to their site and get the phone number, then call and ask for Rich. Be sure to explain the year and the one-piece frames w/spings assy. He'll know what you're talking about and can fill you in. I'm not sure they're even in the catalog, and you'll never find 'em in their on-line info. Not cheap though. But they're the only place I've found that has them other than having an upholstery shop attempt it from scratch. Please post what you find out!

Ron communicated with Rich from Beachwood Canvas and sent me a PM. Hope he doesn't mind me sharing. Looks like $165.00 per seat plus padding and upholsterer's labor.

    "Hey Don,

Here's the correspondence I had with Beachwood about the covers.....Ron

    Dear Ron
That sounds like the later style seen, we should be able to verify that with pictures. The disadvantage to that style of seat is that no cushions are available, just covers and the covers are $82.50 each for the uppers and $82.50 each for the lowers, which is $165.00 per seat. They must be padded with a layer of each of felt, jute and angel hair. We can supply the padding as well, but we recommend these covers be installed by an experienced upholsterer.
    Sincerely
    Rich

    Rich,

I just found a guy last night that has a drivers seat frame for $50, that sounds like what you've described. The cushions are mostly rotted away, but the springs are there.
He emailed me pictures of the front/top and the back/bottom, but those are on my home computer, not here on my work computer.

The frame is round steel tubing and one piece, it doesn't fold in the middle....
The left front leg bolts to one of the three holes in the doorway frame...
The foot of the right front leg curves to the back, and has three holes in it, bolts to the floor just right of the gas tank....
The foot of the right rear leg also has three holes in it, bolts to the floor in the back....
There's no mounting foot on the left rear....
The springs appear to be attached right to the frame, and I can't see any kind of support straps or pans....
The springs are coil type, and the cushions appear to be squareish shaped....

Does this sound like the late 50's seat that you mentioned, and is that something that you can provide cushions for? I've arranged to buy it, but I won't have it in my hands for awhile. I can send you the photos if you want.

    Thank you!

    Ron"

I believe the seat covers in Animal were purchased from Artistc productions in Oregon the same place I got mine. Quality and price are excellent $125.00 for both seat covers Driver and passenger The problem. The guy is an idiot it took over 2 months to get my covers and I purchased them from him on e-bay. He has screwed Pilot Mike and others do a search here on his company . I got lucky but others have not . Just my 2 cents.

Captain CJ, correct me if i'm wrong, but I thought the ebay guy was selling covers for the next later vintage seats, the ones that are like individual buckets that have the foam cores and not springs, and mount onto separate frames? Isn't this the type of seat that Bestop makes replacements of?

The seats in Animal look like they're the same kind as my earlier photo, back in post #7, that have the one-piece frames with built in springs (1956-196?). It was my understanding that these are two completely different types of seats, and the covers aren't the same?

Billy! What kind of seats are those? And where did you get the covers? (Damn nice looking covers, I might add...I want some just like that!)
