Does anyone know where I can buy a waterproof distriutor cap and coil or how to fabricate something that will stop water from getting in when splashing threw the puddles ?
    Thanks,
    Dave

If it's not too much water you can try spraying everything with silicon.

Get a rubber distrubutor cover off of most Ford V8s in the 80s/90s...

How will that help with a 258?

I had an '82 with a 258, and after using my finger to lay a thin bead of silicone around the base of the cap, where it mounts to the distributor, I had no further problems. I drove in water regurlarly that covered my 33s. Always wanted to put on an electric fan in that jeep to lessen water spray when I was in the water.

You might try making a "girdle" for the cap out of an inner tube, say from a balloon tire bicycle or a wheelbarrow tire. seal up any holes around the vacuum advance with silicon sealer. Make sure that your wires and boots on the cap, plugs and coils seal tightly. Maybe a little silicon grease between the boots, wires and cap. They sell waterproof coil covers for VWs that will probably fit any oilcan style coil.

I've found that the main problem comes from condensation on the inside of the distributor cap after you shut off the engine. If that happens, you can pop the cap, wipe it out, and you're rolling again.

I've got a rubber boot from a Ford Taurus with a V-6. Cost of shipping you can have it. Had it kicking around for a while and don't need it. PM me with info if you want it. Nickmil.
