I am ready to paint my 70 cj5 on Monday. Somebody told me an amateur should never use metallic paint. I already have a gallon of acrylic enamel ready to go. Any tips, or stories are appreciated TIA.

I painted my 62 with sprucetip green metallic ( a stock color) in 1990. I followed all the instructions and it turned out fine. And if there ever was an amatuer that would be me. I used dupont dulux, it was easy to work with, and now 16 years later it still looks very good to me. I think it looks even better because it has faded, and people ask me if that is original paint. Unfortunately dulux is no longer avaliable.

The issues with metallic paint especially acrylic enamel is that if there is a mistake such as a run or dirt in the finish it can't be effectively sanded out and must be resprayed. This is due to the orientation of the metal flake in the paint. Additionally, variations in gun distance from the work, air pressure, etc. can generate "light" or "dark" areas in the finish.

With all that said, I am a amatuer and I painted my 70 Cj last week with Avocado Mist Metallic (COde 431) and despite a few bugs, a bit of dust, 2 small runs, and a little light dark variation in one spot it came out great. I am super satisfied with it.

Just follow the manufacturer's specs and take your time. If you've never painted check out a few websites on technique and practice on some scrap.

Go for it and good luck!

Hey Dave. I have 3 that are sitting at my house if you still need practice. I would be happy with your amatuer paint job! Come on up, no love bugs here.
