Went out there at 1am, worked till 7 am, slept till 1 pm, now I'm here. Hoping to catch a few more hours of wink wink before i go to work at 6. I took a good look at the distributor, and everything made perfect sense, inside and out. No spark was dedicated to a couple corroded contacts and very bad points. I checked everything and it all read out perfect. I learned so much last night(this morning), a huge checkpoint for me. It definitly made no sense taking out the mechanical advance. Anyways, I fixed the spark, temporarily bolted the shackle bracket back to the frame, and fixed the clutch linkage with a piece of chain, a couple S hooks and a threaded eylet (the adjustment).

The engine still won't start tho, but it sounds beauitiful. Its finally got the "boom" or pop that engines get when they wanna catch. I'm gonna change plugs and wires, which probably arn't the issue. The engine spun slow, so I loaded the waterpump pulley, sterring pulley, and crankshaft with wd-40 (alot of it!) and it helped alot. It seems like there is one spot where the engine might be sticking when it goes around. Anyways, possible causes I came up with: I sprayed the bottom distributor plate with degreaser (probably a bad Idea). Maybe the moisture? Could be the plugs and wires but I doubt it, I'm changing them anyway. might be the valves? Sounds like it could be the timing? It want's to catch, but it just won't. honestly, I think it just needs to be turned a bunch, since it hasn't run in 15 yrs. it seems like it gets a little better and better, but very little. For now, I'm just gonna change the plugs and wires, keep pouring oil in the plug holes and keep turning it.
Last night was a milestone for me. Any input? It's so close!!!

And I have two pieces of advice. Number 1: points don't get pitted if you have a grinding wheel. Number 2: A green ground screw on an AC duplex receptacle threads perfect for when you lose one of the screws to hold the points set on.

Oh yea, and the obvious, the carb needs a good overhaulin. I think its the valves tho, cause I can here a hiss when I hit the starter. Thats what happened to my snowblower. Had no power, cleaned the whole carb 3 times. brought it to a small engine mechanic. he pulled the cord, heard a hiss, ground and reseated the valves and now it runs like new. Probably a much harder task on a 6 cylinder...but it might have to be done. maybe its just the valve cover gasket? But I don't think so because the valve cover has a vaccum line that goes to the air filter? So its not sealed up air tight anyways. right? or no?

Sounds like you are doing well, Strider. Be patient and you'll get it all figured out. And learn alot about your Jeep. The more you know, the better off you'll be out in the woods, when things go wrong. As they sometimes will. lol A bad valve or two won't keep it from firing. It might run like crap with a bad valve, but it'll still run. It looks like you have some of the PO's stuff to straighten out also.

Just a thought if you are pouring oil in the plug holes it will most likley inhibit the motor from firing.try new plugs and dont pour any oil in the cylinders it might fire. Just my 2 cents

:iagree: To the point of hydrolocking it possibly, and that leads to a whole buncha bent things.... You may have crudded up the plugs with the oil.

I just sqirted wd-40 in, and it was a while ago. I'm thinking its actually the carb. I gotta replace my clutch cable, cause my homeade chain linkage isn't tight enough, lol. Once I get a clutch, I'm gonna have someone push me and drop it. Should fire up no matter what. if it dosn't, i think its gotta be the carb. I am so sleep deprived now and because of it, I got pnemonia, I gotta take a break for a couple of days. Any forsight or helpful hints I should now about changing the clutch cable? It looks like its just a clip you pop off with pliers or a screwdriver.

Change your oil. Can't imagine that WD-40 helps it's properties much....
