To get the engine at TDC to reinstall my distributor and oil pump I pulled the valve cover and lined up the timing mark at 0* watching for both valves in #1 to be closed so I wasn't at the top of the stroke on the exhaust stroke, right?

Sounds correct , I always checked buy holding a finger over the #1 cylinder spark plug hole , and haveing someone crank the motor around with a socket on the crank bolt . Feeling for air compression , being forced out.
At that point I , insert a wooden dowl to watch the highest it will move up, for top dead center. Workrd for me .
Making sure the battery or coil wire is pulled .

There's no distributor in it, it's HEI so no coil wire to disco. ;)

Battery is discoed from the git go. Good advice though.

No one else to help me, gotta do this myself. MOP's outa town and I don't think my lovely wife cares to help on such a cold wet day.

Maybe I should have sent you my home made starter switch too... I hold my finger in spark plug hole one bump the starter, when it gets close I turn it by hand with a long 1/2 ratchet on the crank.

Got no help in the shop most of the time too.

take all of the plugs out except #1 and then push it forward in gear. where it stops is close enough to tdc that it really doesn't matter when you go to tune it in.... i was never really able to feel this air thing that everyone else can do.

It's pretty easy to see when both valves are closed, esp. since the mark on the damper lines up with 0*.

I was just double checking to make sure I didn't screw something else up.
