From recent experience, be sure the dist cap is on tight. Mine wasn't, similar symptoms. Good spring tension in the holddown lugs? Your HEI have 4 holddowns? All engaged & tight?

That's fine, I checked that Sat. when it died when I checked to make sure the distributor hadn't slipped.

Justin, no I haven't looked at it, it was 20* out there yesterday.

The flattie did this once. Turned out it had blown a rubber plug off one of the carb fittings. It was a fitting that was not being used and I had put a plug over it. When it backfired, it blew off, and wouldn't start unless you held the throttle wide open.

    Just something else to check...

    Good luck.

How screwed am I and what the heck happened?

After I got home and put everything in and it still wouldn't start it occured to me that the rotor hadn't changed position after I'd cranked on it for a bit. I pulled the distributor and found this?

Did I get the gear on the cam put on backwards? I thought I checked and double and triple checked that to be sure it was right. The distributor fit in without more effort than normal to get the O-ring past the opening.

Well, you now have lots of metal in the pan, never good. The other gear is probably trashed also. Might as well start pulling it down. When you pull the front cover you may also find a mess in there too. Bummer Adam.

I've not this experience directly, but I do see something similar happen on guitar tuning keys. (I know, quite a stretch. ) Obviously, the gear is stripped. Does the dist. shaft turn by hand? If not, then it may have siezed up and caused the scalloping on the gear. If it does turn free, then something bound it up and caused that gear to be eaten. At any rate, my wish for you is that a new gear (or distributor) bolts right in and works for you.

That being said, (and given I know not much but the basics about your Jeep.) I'd be doing two things....

    1) shine a light down there and see if the teeth on the cam are OK
    2) change the oil.

    Good luck Sparky.

I talked with Patrick on the phone.

His advice is to tear down the distributor, make sure it's clean and tight, put a new gear on it.

Then turn the crank by hand and check the teeth on the cam gear. From his experience the cam gear is harder than the distributor gear so it COULD be fine. The small portion I saw/felt was fine I think. Ran out of daylight. Hafta look at it more tomorrow.

Then drop the oil pan and clean it out.

He also said Matt's '97 Chevy 1 ton 454 did this a couple months ago. No reason known to them...

Do you have a spare distributor to get a gear?

Patrick said he's seen it on distributors before with nothing else harmed and no reason he could discern.
