I'm looking for ideas on how to lock the cap on my Jerry can.

I recently installed a Jerry can rack on my rear bumper, it hasn't been a problem YET, but I have a feeling that toting a red gas can out in plain sight might be too tempting for some people .

I know that I can put a cable around the can to keep it in place, but I also know some people have had their gas just siphoned out anyway.

Is there any way to lock, or secure the cap to a Jerry can???

    Thanks in advance fellas,

    Allan.

Best way I know of is to simply leave it empty until you hit the trail. I figger I'll be filling up the underseat tank before an outing anyway, so no biggie to fill the Jerry can.

That or fill it full of deisel, crappy old gas, and water and wait for someone to take it.

I guess I'm rubbing off on some of you guys.... R)

Seriously, I'd look for a way to attach a chain link or something to the lid so the cable could run through it, or mebbe a rod that fits through one of the holes in the ears of the lid to keep it from turning when the other end of the rod is padlocked to the handle of the can.

If your can has the old cover with the four curled edges. You may find a bike lock to go through it. Or as we did in Nam. Take the cap off and weld a washer to it. Then a bike lock from the washer to the handle. I will keep the semi= honest people out of it. The "pro" will take your Jeep and leave the MT can.

"Locks are meant to keep out honest people" Reminds me of a story my uncle told me. During WWII, gas was rationed. He was about 16 and he and his buddies used to siphon gas out of this rich guy's Buick. The guy got tired of it and bought a locking gas cap. To get around that, they slid a pan under the tank and drove a railroad spike up through the bottom of the tank. :smash: The point being," When people build ten foot walls, other people will build 12 foot ladders". I have the Jerry cans on Shaggy held on with nylon seat belts. I filled them only when going to the back country. Somehow, I think you meet a better class of people there than in the city. FWIW.

    Thanks for the ideas guys,

I hadn't thought about tacking a washer to the lid, I think that's the way I might go.

I know I could leave it empy, but my gas gauge isn't very reliable, and it's really embarrasing when you come to a sputtering stop on the freeway during rush hour traffic in Seattle. I like the piece of mind knowing that I've got at least half a tank of gas behind me and the wife no matter where we are.

I know I could just spend the couple bucks to get the gauge fixed, but that's just waaaay to easy R)

You need one of these. My gauge works, and I still have one next to the driver's seat.....
