Background : I'm upgrading Tonka to 11" brakes with a dual master cylinder. I'm considering using SS lines.

Observation: Suppliers sell a number of different CJ5 SS brake line kits based on model year, specifically for the years 67-68, 69-71, 72-73, 74-75. Nothing for pre-67 :(.

Option: Along with the brakes (from a '76 DJ5) I also got a little four port doohickey that may be either

    A)- a proportioning valve
    or
B)-just a handy place to mount the brake light switches.

Oxymoron: I want to retain the stock look/routing.

Question 1: Which year kit should I order that will work with the dual MC, optionally with the doohickey, & keep the same (or close to the same) routing, including how the hoses mount at the ends of the front axle ?

Question 2: Anyone know of an online source documenting the various brake line configurations for the years in question ??

Querstion 3: Does anyone know if there are wheel cylinders that will fit the 11" backing plates that have smaller diameter pistons, i.e. 15/16 vs. 1" so as too eliminate the need for the front/rear proportioning valve ?

    Thanks :),

    H.

    1) wagner lists 2 different dual MC's, one of them has a flip top and might require push rod be made shorter. The other is listed as a dual rear wheel, has the bolt down top and uses the :v6: style pedal (no longer made. :( ) I used the dual wheel one with herm's bracket. to use the :hurrican: pedal one needs to make a bushing to expand the stud to the larger :v6: hole.

    3) I used the same 1 1/8" wheel cylinders front/rear. figure I can aways add a valve if it's needed on the rear line later.

    Howard,
Don't have specific answers for ?'s - just wondering why you're looking at SS tubing and why you can't use the existing lines as patterns to bend your own? NAPA sells a good bender that will do 3/16, 1/4, 5/16 and 3/8 (think it was $7-$8).
Excellent opportunity to broaden your knowledge and hone your skills at bending tube (stress management therapy). R) R) R)
Piratejack.net has good brake info as well. I bought a metering valve and residual pressure valves from them.

    As always - good luck!

:voice of experience on: if you buy stainless lines and you have to change one of the ends, get out your sailor's dictionary because you will need every word in it. :voice of experience off:

if I had it to do again I would save the money and buy mild steel lines, if I get enough rust to go through one of the lines, the rest of the jeep will be toast as well. $0.02

Yeah, I think that's right - the SS lines may last forever, but the steel lines will last 30-50 years or so. That's probably long enough for most owners.

Dan, I could go into a cost/benifit analysis breakdown or I could quote an engineering study on the superior properties of 302 stainless over regular tubing.

I could simply state that I want to do this once & never have to worry about it again.

I could ... Oh, what the hell, the real reason is-

    There, I've said it.

I'm not proud of it, but there it is.

Don't some states (PA?) require stainless lines in order to pass inspection?

Sure - just add CP in front of the PN's and tell the parts guy someone from Texas swore that they were right. R) R) R)

    Rear brake hose Wagner F80028 (BH80028 )
    Brake shoes NJA BS228
Hardware kit Wagner F87352S or Autozone H7137
    Speedbleeder HELP rack #12701 3/8 x 24 - 1.19 long

That's all unless you need front disc brake PN's for 79-86 CJ or stock MC and stoplight switch. :)
