Ron, thats what I did. Scribed 3 lines on the outside, drilled my holes on 3 lines, staggered in relation to each other. They work very well. Disc-like performance when dry, and very good when wet.
I used Postal non-finned new drums.

The "spiral" across the drum is probably the best thing to do.
Billy, I didn't realize that you did the spiral... 8)

If I had access to a Bridgeport and a dividing head.....but I don't even have a drill press. Can't see trying to do them in a vise.

Having a machine shop do two rows of holes on straight planes on four drums will be expensive enough, having them do the spiral effect would be outrageous.

I looked at the CH Topping site. It was something like $35/drum, plus shipping 4 heavy drums east coast to west coast and back...
I decided if I was going to consider spending that amount, I may as well get something for my $$$ besides holes... ;)
I bought a 12" benchtop Delta drill press, built a jig from some 2x10 and pipe, drilled them myself for less than Topping would have charged... and have used the drill press for many projects since then! :D

Moisture aside, Heat dissipation is more important than venting and that's what the fins are for.
