Well, got a 75 304 with a mallory coil and distributor. The motor will fire right up run a few seconds and die. It will crank several times with no fire from the coil, let it set a few minutes and it will fire up again. It will do this 3 or 4 times then will start and run. It will start and run fine until it sets all day at work or all night at home. Is there something that needs replaced? I did replace the ign, and checked all the wiring. Thanks for any ideas/help. Walt

Just FYI, seems the problem is the porcelin ballast resistor. When the motor cranks with no fire, I can use a jumper wire to bypass the resistor and it will start and stay running. Take the jumper wire off and it will crank with no fire.

Did you check the voltage on the + side of the coil? Should be ~12 or so while cranking, and drop to something around 9 while running. Sounds like the ballast may be junk...

That was the problem. The ballast is junk.
