What's the deal with the shape of those bolt heads?

I boogered up/rounded off the bolt heads trying to remove them. Any prob w/ using standard hex-head nuts?

are you talking about the 12-point heads? If so, a $3 socket at Sears will go a long way. They shouldn't be that tight in the first place, only ~12 ft/lbs IIRC.

Thanks MOP. Note to self re: socket.

But why are they that shape in the first place?
And, any reason why standard hex bolts wouldn't work?

I don't know which retainer you are talking about, but they may have used those bolt because of clearance issues. My steering box uses those same type of bolts for the mount.

He's talking about the cover/retainer on the front of the tranny that goes around the input shaft. I don't think clearence is an issue there...but that is a common reason for their use.

Hmmm, I have a junker T90 here that I got from termin8ed that had the bearing retainer held in place w/allen screws! Dunno why you couldn't use any old kinda bolt? (I would recommend grade 5s at least though).

Welp I just yanked the T86 and lo & behold there were regular hex-head bolts. :? I prolly did that b4 installing it. But there apparently weren't any issues with clearance, Clarence. ;)
