Front brake lights????

I have a front brake light.

I pulled up to the fuel pumps the other morning and saw my reflection in the glass on the front of the gas station. Usually I admire my Jeep at this point but instead I was baffled. I noticed that my right front turn signal was on and went off when I took my foot off the brakes.... What the:? ........Anybody seen this before?

I know I'm due for a complete re-wire but that's scheduled after the axles, compressor, seats, etc.etc.

 

You probably have a ground issue with one of your lights, and it is backfeeding into the turn signal. I have seen this problem on some of the rusty old cars that come through the shop where I work. I would try tracing that first.

 

real long shot here, but on some vehicles the brake light wire runs through the blinker switch to get to the bright filiment of the brake/blinker light. corosion or foriegn mater inside the blinker switch can make contact to the wrong parts of the system. you may want to try cycling the blinker lever a few times and see if that has any effect. it may need cleaning. $.02

 

Either that or some one accidentially wired the turnsignal side of the 1157 bulb in the rear lamp and it's bleeding back thru the front. Handy if you do alot of backing down the hills. But I agree with AMC, get the multi-meter out, ya got some tracing to do.

 

Maybe you're low on blinker fluid.

 

No, I think his problem is to much brake fluidR)

 

Well, I added 2 quarts of blinker fluid and that didn't fix it.R)

I've been tracing the wires and checking grounds. I'm scared to mess with the wiring too much on this thing because it's so brittle. I'll try replacing the blinker switch and see if that helps. They're cheap.

If somebody has any better ideas feel free to jump in. I'm stumped.:?

 

Things like this caused me to just replace the wiring harness, especially when I found light cord wire running to the rear lights.

 

wiring is not that hard. Don't let it scare you off. First determine where the short is. All you need it a multi-meter or if nothing else, a homemade continunity light. Start at the tail lamp and work back to the dash. Mainly because we don't know where anyone may of changed the color of your turn signal wire. My Jeep started with brown and yellow and went to black and red. Brown and yellow were the usual colors for tail light circuits. Use your wiring diagram. It is nothing more than a road map, think of it like trying to get from Pasadina to Vernon, Ca. and one of the off ramps is closed. Take your time, yell if you need help. I just went through the wiring on my 75 when I put in a new signal-stat blinker. Does the back brake light come on also? Just thinking it could be in the pyrmid connecter under the dash. The brake light feed comes into the prymid connector then is sent out through the tail light wires. Front blinker feed should not be hot. You can check this with a test light and wiring diagram pretty easy.

 

This is exactly the problem I had with my jeep when I first bought it. The previous owner had for some reason replaced the rear lights and splices the wiring instead of just pluggingf the lights into the harness. The ground was messed up, causing puwer to go thru the ground when the brakes were applied and causing the front turn signals to come on. Simple fiv, just trace down what should be the ground and check for other possible shorts in the brake light wiring that may be grounding.

Then kick back and have a cold one!
