Hello, have a 75 with flanged axles. There is about 1/4" of in and out play on each side. Is this ok, or what does it mean? There is no up-down play, or wobble, just a stright in/out play? No noise or noted binding when turning. Any ideas?

Sounds like the axle bearing is bad. I'd pull it apart and inspect. That axles uses a tapered bearing and should have very little play. Nickmil.

If the backing plate is secured correctly then there should be very little in-out play.
As stated above pull the shaft and inspect the bearing and the race. Sounds like it may be bad.

Make sure that you use the proper bearings, and don't let the parts man sell you on the wrong one. It happens often. The correct Timken number is; SET10, a tapered bearing. They sometimes try to sell you on a roller bearing with numbers such as BR10 etc. These are wrong and even dangerous in my opinion. BR10's are inferior for side loads etc, and if they do fail you will lose your wheel, axle and brake drum. You may have seen my rant on this a few weeks ago.
