My rear dana 44 is leaking where the driveshaft meets the differential and my front dana 30 is leaking on both sides. I'm guessing the seals need to be replaced and I was wondering if anyone has done this before and if they could give me some info/tips on how to do it.

On the rear, you pull the yoke, then use a seal puller to remove the oil seal. I used a length of closet rod (wood dowel 1 1/4" dia?) as a punch and drove in the new seal. You need to tap it in evenly a little at a time. Unless you can get your hands on a real seal driver. The seals for the D30 are on the inside of the housing. I'm assuming you are leaking 90wt out the axle tubes? To replace these you have to tear down the axle all the way to where you only have the pinion left in it. Once you pull the carrier you can see the seals inside the tubes. I used a longer piece of dowel to drive them into the housing. To install the new seals you need to make a tool out of a length of all-thread, a couple of large washers and a couple of nuts. I think the FSM shows a picture of the installation tool. You can fab one from the above parts. Get washers that are about the same dia. as the seals. Put one seal in at a time. I think I used 1/2" all-thread for mine. Maybe someone else has some ideas on this one. But that worked for me.

    jackson5,
On the D44 prob, there was a very informative & detailed discussion on the topic of the rear diff seal a couple years ago. Brad started it and it was called "Rear Diff leakypooh" R)

It's worth e-gold just doing the search on "leakypooh". :D
