I'm in the middle of rebuilding my dana 44 rear end out of my 1974 cj5 & I have a question. I sent the axles out to have the bearings replaced and when they came back there was one pc. bearings on the axles. When I took it apart there was an outer race that was in the axle tube and a tapered brg. on the shaft. Is this one pc. bearing the wrong one or just a newer style? Will it still work? Thanks for any input.

I would not run anything but Timken bearings. The Timken # is SET10. They are a tapered roller bearing, when you get them the outer race(cup) is sort of bonded to the cone(bearing). They separate by themselves in service. At present there are a lot of companies trying to pass off the wrong cheaper bearings with numbers such as BR10 etc. If you examine these they are regular roller bearing and not the correct tapered roller type. They are not as good for side loads etc(think off camber in a 4 wd on trail or high speed cornering). They may work for a while, but are not as good. The big problem is when they fail. You then have your wheel, brake drum and axle pass you as you are going down the road or worse, tumbling down the side of a mountain. Make darn sure they gave you the correct bearings and don't accept less.

I have one in a Scout that I plan to replace also. The parts guy where I bought it insisted that it was just a new style also. It is about a year old and I was OK with it until a buddy lost his. He needed to replace the axle, brake backing plate/shoes and drum. It also did a bit of body damage and minor tire cuts. Body damage was no big deal if you saw his rig. After witnessing that I did a bit of research and found out about the bearings.
