I have read all the posts on Cams. Most of the guys sway between stock and mild RV. I would like to get some of your latest opinions.
My driving style includes some off road, more on though. Like the feel of a good pull around 25-3000 RPM. Gotta still have low end though for rocks and 4wd trails. Thanks for your input.

I think you just answered your own question Ryan, stock or close to it.

The thing is with cams, there just isn't any free lunch; What you gain in one rpm-band has to come from somewhere else. That's why street and race cams have that rumpty-rump idle, because they moved the power band up to the top-end.

IMHO, I'd stick with either a stock cam or a very mild RV-type cam that is going to keep your performance down on the low end, or maybe move it slightly toward the range you're looking for. Most cam makers have a comparison chart to show where their products work the best, you might have to call them or email them to get it.

Besides, the Dauntless already has a funky idle that's hard to resist! :D

used the comp cams 252h when I rebuilt the motor. made a BIG difference. It wasn't cheap (got the kit, was about $550 at flaps). Since you have to tear the motor apart to install the cam, good time to rebuild the :v6: .

wait. %$550 for a comp cam? i got mine from PAW for cheep.

here's what ya do. get some rhodes variable valve timing lifters and a comp 260h. the rhodes will give you less lift (simulating smaller cam) at below 3000 rpm. once it hits 3k rpm, they full open up and give you passing ability. this is the setup i have for my truck. the rhodes lifters are $65 bux or so and the comp cam was like $125ish from PAW. i can get the exact #'s when i get home for you.
this is what all the newer Japanse cars are going too to maintain low end torque and still have high end passing..

Interesting, so do the lifters expand with an increase in oil pressure, or how do they work?
Whats is your performance like compared to stock?

how they work is they bleed off faster than stock, so you have to flow alot more rpm/oil through em to get em to pump fully. the faster the rpm, the more they pump up until around 3 grand. then they open up 100%.
check out their web site..google em. read on the original rhodes lifters..you could gain up too 25% more torque and more vacuum at low rpm. check em out. this will alow you to go to a larger profile cam and still maintain low end torque. which gives you great passing power, cause your cam is allowing you engine to breath ar higher rpm.
read the article and see for yourself.
the cam from PAW cam in its own box, plus a larger box with ALOT of wrapping..they protected it well..i would trust em to send anything.

Thanks for the feedback on those. I would think it would take some precise machining of the lifter holes for those to work correctly. I will read up on them on their web site. Thanks :)

Read up on em and talked to my engine builder and they sound good.
He said the only complaint he has had is the noise they make. He said they click alot. What do you think since you are running them?

Not like the 225 is a quiet valve train anyway. I guess I'm too function oriented. So what if it makes noise. Does it do what I want it too? If it does the noise isn't going to hurt anything. JMO. YMMV. etc.

agreed sparky..the lockers click, but we install those puppies too. i have the lifter sitting in a box. engine isnt built yet so i cant give you a deffinate. but my dad has run em in his bronco-400 and he said they worked flawlessly. thats what propmted me to buy them. he has a 76 or so cj7 with the 304 and is thinking of sticking the offenhauser dual port intake with the holley 470, the comp 260h and the rhodes lifters like i have in his due to past experience (and my dads the kinda person who wont fix if it isnt broken, so if they work that well....).
anyway, just a few tips to give you "off the cuff" low end torque while still maintaining passing ability. i am hoping itll rip my neck off when i kick the gas to it. comp high energy are designed for carb-low compression engines...oh, these lifters and cam combo off 800-5200 rpm power band. normaill 1200-5200 from the camp and the lifters bring the rpm band down to idle. plus the low end torque from the offy intake should give it all that even more. and its power band goes to around 5k aswell. so it should rip my head off all the way to 5000 and stop (great)..=)

    in theory...lol

Your right not only is the valvetrain loud, but so are our jeeps:)
An most important is the function we are after!
    Thanks Phalanx

I'm not sure I can hear lifters over my shorty turbos and side exits coming right off the headers. R)

shorty turbo's? mine has freakin glass pax...ACK. i cant even hear my CB cranked all the way up at 35mph..=)

welcome there willys. always a pleasure to get on a soapbox and rant and rave about jeeps (sometimes i think i know what i am talking about..) =)
    lol
    but not often..=)
i just cant wait tilll i get my v6 built and rated. i wanna see what my torque/hp is. all these "torque mods" i bought are killing me to try out. i just hope they are additive in torque and not just cost..lol.

Let me know how that engine comes out when you finish it, I'm eager to know. Thanks again.
