Has anybody got any advice on removing the fiber camshaft gear without hosing the thing up???

I've got a pretty good assortment of pullers but none of them can get a grip on the back of the hub :(.

    Thanks,

    H.

I've never done it yet, but if it's on the cam, won't it just come out with the cam? Or are you talking about the gear on the crank?

If i'm reading the FSM correctly theres a doohicking holding the camshaft in that is located behind the gear. It certainly doesn't want to pull right out anyhow & I have enough broken gears for this week :(. (see "Oil Pump" thread)

If it was mine I'd plan on replacing the gear. It might look good but after a while they start getting brittle.

Here’s my inexperienced 2 cents…. I actually have been researching this same thing for the past couple of weeks. I’m reviving my ’63 CJ5 and need to replace the front engine plate, so the camshaft fiber gear had to come off. I stumbled across a gear puller set at Harbor Freight this past weekend that had what I could use. Item # 30305 and it cost $31.99.

Before I found this puller, I tried both the Craftsman Large & Small gear 2 jaw pullers with no luck; they both kept slipping off and chewed up the timing gear. Most boards recommend using a straight jaw puller, some recommending a Stanley Proto straight 2 jaw puller if you want to reuse the timing gear… this puller runs around $145.

Most of the feedback I found recommends replacing the fiber gear; it warps & dings easily and also gets brittle with age. I really couldn’t find many who would say to reuse the gear.

The Harbor Freight puller easily removed the gear. From what I could see, there was little damage, except the ding in one of the 2 holes where the puller slipped out of my hand and the original damage from the Craftsman pullers. This puller grabs a different spot than the Craftsman Pullers.

I’m not sure if Harbor Freight has this one on-line, I found it in the store.

Below are pictures of the set; I used the silver L-shaped straight puller jaw in the center. Hopefully this helps give you an idea of what you may need.

That kit should be perfect for pulling steering wheels too.

Thanks everbody, I'll probably end up letting the engine rebuilder worry about it.
