Just a bit of curiousity on my part. Whatever is SUPPOSED to go there might be in boxes in my attic...

The same holes on my '69 windshield frame also hold bolts for original hard top hinge assembly.

He DID post a full shot of it, a front-right view a few days ago. He was thinking of selling the f/glas tub and going with a Replitub, but we told him it's too pretty for that. http://www.earlycj5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=24279

Allow me to give you a little advice. I also have a 75 cj5 and asked myself the same question about what the heck those holes were for. Not a week after i bought the thing (PO didn't leave it in the best of shape) I'm humming down the road on a windy day and all of a sudden theres a gust of wind and I heard a snap, and the windshield frame was about 1/2 of an inch from my nose and the glass had smashed on the steering wheel. The lesson was learned. 1 - don't let your windshield frame get rusty. 2 - up to 1976, cj5 hinges like yours and mine that bolt to the bottom of the w/s frame came with a bar that slides up the side and is held in by bolts through those two holes. I also heard that after time the windshield frame will bend backward making your top saggy.

Hmm..I think you've got the wrong holes in mind.

The w/s hinge bolts are lower and from the face of the w/s frame - they're the two bolt heads seen in the lower left of this pic (just by the Ramber tire):

You can see the door hinge sticking out to the inside of the frame higher up - that's where the holes in question are.

Must have been a mod someone did to the 72 i took apart because on that w/s frame they went all the way up to the two he's talkning about. I'm still looking for some hinges for mine because the PO cut those support bars off.

I had to post in this htread, just because of the title.

Having said that, the softtop is what they were originally for, but it doesn't take a lot of work to modify them to use a lightbar from a newer model CJ

Huh...have had 2 early w/s and 2 intermediate ones and all of them had hinges that only went up in the frame 6" or so...but who knows what variations are out there.

ConFerr used to make some nifty auxillary light brackets that utilized these two holes, and had a tab in front to mount the lights. I ran my lights on those brackets for years; many of the pics of my rig on this site show those brackets. I recently moved my lights and sold the brackets to Kyle (2pwrlftrs4u), I don't think ConFerr makes them anymore... but they'd be pretty easy to fab.
My soft top upper door hinge also bolts to those holes, on the inside of the frame.
