so i know there are differences between the two but what exactly are they. i know the ICJ is longer, so where is the stretch at? front horns? middle like 6 ( ~and rear like 8 )? upper swoop between front tub mount and engine mount? i have a crappy diagram of the ECJ frame but can't find one readily for the ICJ, so if you got pics or links. main concern is 4 banger ECJ5 and v8 ICJ5. thanks.

    i know the :v6: boys are chringin.R)

Longer fenders and hood on an AMC CJ. So it's in front of the tub.

There's pics of an Intermediate with a Early body and front clip on it floating around here somewhere.

Should be like Sparky said but I have measured and of course the springs are same length IIRC. I have been suspecting that the length comes just before the spring hanger. I can't be positive about this but if you'll look at a long fender model seems that the front wheels sit further back in the wheel wells than they do on the ECJ especially with a lift. That'd stll be in front of the tub. Of course the 76 and later are 37" wide in the rear as opposed to 28" for the early.

Yes the springs are the same. The body panels in front of the cowl are 5" longer, but wheelbase is only 3" longer compared to '71 and older. The rear wheel placement and tub alignment is the same, so the 3" of length happens between the cowl and the spring mount. The tires are 2" further back in the front fender wells than in older CJs, and this can cause some interference problems. The front crossmember, steering box mount, and grille mount are also different. The front frame stiffness comes from the new, large front crossmember, and the front bumper bolts on (previously it was riveted and was needed for front frame horn rigidity. In 1970, the diagonal braces under the rear floor were removed to provide room for the rear-mounted gas tank.

thanks guys. i knew that the springs were the same length and that the front clip was longer, so was figuring that the addition length was between the tub and spring hanger. still a nice frame measurement diagram would be helpful. maybe i'll try a friend's body shop, he owns me some favors. if he can still get drawings for this old iron i'll post them up. that pic of the ECJ body on an ICJ frame would be nice to see.

another quick q, the additional length more for the L6 or for the V8? i'm betting on the 6.

let me know if i need to move this to intermediates. if you can't tell i'm looking in to swapping in a amc 360 into a 62 5. i know, flame away.

I was in the middle of swapping a '72-'75 frame under a '66 tub when I sold it. I was just going to move the front spring mounts back 2 inches. I removed the front flat crossmember and was going to move it back to the proper location, but the grill mount would have to be thicker than stock. It is welded and bolted in place. I cut the spring and shock mounts off, they have to be moved back, and they are welded and riveted in place. The tub bolts right in the stock Intermediate location.

I have read here that it's the length of the I6, and that the V8 will fit without any change. This seems likely since the Buick 350 will fit in the Jeepster without any changes other than shortening the core support.
