Hey all, do the body tubs on '55 and '56 CJ5's have the "bow sockets" on the rear corners? I see a lot of JEEPS that have them, but mine doesn't. Here's a shot I borrowed of Old Bill's rear end that shows them. (Sorry Thad!)

My '56 does as does the '66 Tux tub I have to replace it with. Just like the pic you posted. Not sure when they went away...........................

This has been discussed somewheres before, IIRC the factory only installed them on jeeps that were ordered with a soft top. Tonka appears never to have had them.

Uh, thought all softtops were dealer installed? All the pics I've seen of Jeeps being shipped from the factory were topless.

I have them on my 65. Do the new replacement tops require these I would like to lose them?

Hmmm, I may be wrong on that, wouldn't be the first time today :)

I thought as there was a "Willys" top it would have been installed at the factory. I've heard that the hard tops that were dealer installed but I thought that was because Willys didn't offer thier own hard top for the 5s.

A quick look at the "tops" section on the CJ3B site seems to indicate that I may, in fact, be (as you all suspected) Full Of It. According to a blurb at the bottom of this page-

    http://www.film.queensu.ca/CJ3B/SoftTopHistory.html

the bow sockets were indeed standard until the 70's. But I *know* I've read somewheres that they didn't all leave the factory with the sockets installed, I just can't find the reference now

Interesting...mine might have been hacked off by a PO, or maybe there never were any. It DID have a soft top on it (see avatar), but who knows when that was put on or who did it. Not even sure what brand it is, probably Kayline or Whitco? But the bows on it went to a central bracket mounted on the rear fenders.

Guess I'll find out when I sand 'er down.

The bow sockets are only for the old style canvas tops that came from the factory, no present day top uses them.

My '56 does. I would'nt want to get rid of them. They make good holders for poles for an awning to camp under.:)

FWIW, I had to cut mine off SSDutch to install the diamond plate corners. I hated to do it, but the alternative of slotting the corners to accomodate them would have required that the whole (just installed) gas tank/bumper/tire carrier would have to come back off, and that wasn't happening.

I don't miss them, I like the cleaner look. Was just wondering if they should have been there by default or if they were an optional thing.

Not on mine, but let me take a closer look to see if the PO removed some. I should be able to find some weld residue if they were on there as he wasn't very meticulous in his modifications.

I have a copy of that photo in my stash somewhere. Didn't realize that was a sliding door on the top, though. That must be a '55, notice the taillights?

My '59 has them. I was considering making bows to fit them to carry kayaks...someday.
