Tire size question.....

I am currently in Iraq but i am still working on my Jeep I have a 73 CJ5 with a hopped up 360 in it. My question is I do not plan on lifting it anytime soon but I need new tires. It has 31's now could 33's fit with the stock supension. I was hoping the bigger tires would calm it down it has alot of motor for it's size... Thanks for your help...

You couldn't stuff a set of 37" Hummer run-flats in your duffle very easily I suppose?

I ran 33"s on my 74 unlifted for a while and it worked fine on the highway but rubbed the fenders offroad. I ended up putting a 3" body lift on it which I plan to remove next week. The body lift is a cheap but shoddy way to lift a Jeep.

For gearing your 73 probably has 3.73's but could have 4.27's. The 3.73's will suck the life out of your engine with tall tires but are perfect for 31's. Find a gear ratio chart (the Quadratec catalog has one, I'm sure they're available online too) and match your tire size, gear ratio and engine rpm's. Find a combination that puts your rpm's at a comfortable range for cruising and there you go.

I run 31's with 3.73 gears and they work well together

 

My '76 had 31s on it.
Could have fit 32s no problem.

 

have run 33's w/no lift not very long. A good deal of rubbage but workable until you get your lift with care...a good deal of it.

 

I currently run 33's with only a couple of inches of body lift. I have a fiberglass body that came with a body mounting tube. We just cut it to use as much as we could. I'm putting a 2.5 inch suspension lift on after the holidays or maybe when it warms up a little

I also have a 360 in my CJ5. From the power standpoint, I am running 32x11.50x15. I hope to have a managable rig with all of this horsepower. I put a 2.5" lift on mine so clearence is'nt a problem.

 

Thanks I still have alot to learn about this jeep I appreicate yall's advice right now I am just trying to get it all together so when I get home I will have it some what ready. It is gretting a rino liner, painted and new rims and tires. The lift and a rear locker will be comming next year hopefully. I have owned it twice LOL I sold it when I joined the army and I went and bought it back.

 

I'm running 33's with 3"-4" of lift and still have a few small rubbing issues. I wouldn't recommend 33's on a stock vehicle. It sounds like my set up is the direction you are heading. With planning I think you will be very happy with the way it performs.
