I have an AMC V8, 1972ish...... I am trying to buy a water pump for it. I do not have one to match up to, and it seems they seperate 1972 from 1973-????. Can Anyone tell me what year to get a pump for? And or what the change is?

    Thanks in advance Frank

What year is your engine? There is an engine build code consisting with six numbers, yours will start with 5 if it’s a 72 or 6 for a 73. There should be a tag attached to the front of the valve cover (passenger side).

There is a difference between the V8 72-73 water pumps as they have two difference part numbers. You should be able to buy either one at your FLAPS.

Is the build code on the block itself? Or just on the tag(that is missing).
I dont even know what year the timing cover came off of. Is there a way I can tell by looking or measuring?

I had the same question so I went to http://www.flowkooler.com/pump.php?pid=WP1781 and compared the specs of the two different pumps and found a 1/16 inch difference in hub height, a slightly different bolt patern at the pully and the inlet OD 1/8 inch larger on the 73+ pump.
    flowkooler has great specs

I don’t believe there is another build date on the block just the engine size that is cast on each side between the freeze plugs.

AFAIK there is only one timing cover for all 2nd gen AMC V8s. The engine build date is on the valve cover (what a dumb idea!). The hub height on the water pump will be determined by the accessory pulleys. As Chuck said, the displacement is cast in to the side of the block. You might be able to narrow down the year by looking up the head casting numbers. These are on the net somewhere - I can't find them right now - I'll try to get back to this later.
