Outboarding the springs would be a required.

you can use the axles in a spring under configuration. you will ahve to outboard the front spring perches to fit the axles though. Right now i have mine spring over, but now i am thinking for a next project jeep i will keep it spring under and cut out the fenders to fit a larger tire. If you plan on rock crawling it would be best to keep it as low center of gravity as you can, it will help keep the tires planted. right now with my spring over and RE 1.5 lift spring over leafs i am pretty tall. i feel stable, but just wwish i was a little lower. possible i may at sometime go back to spring under with custom leaves

if you rock crawl i would suggest that. and look into getting wither a nice set of springs or go custom, the money spent is worth it

If you're thinking of the Jeep J-truck axles, they are reeeeally wide, say 65-66". Dan has Wagoneer axles IIRC, which are around 57-58" wide. The fronts for both trucks and wagons are D44s, though the heavier trucks have a D60 rear. In the late 60s to early 70s, Jeep used a semi-full-float D60 called the 60-2 for their medium duty trucks, which has 5 lugs and is a very pouplar upgrade for CJs. They are usually narrowed though, and that incurs some machine shop costs.

If your going to run fullwidth axles, might as well go SOA. You'll have made the choice to go all out, you'll have the stability, and you'll have more clearance for the larger tires you'll need to not get hung up on rocks etc...

If your going to cut them down then you have more choices. How much to cut, outboard or not, SOA or SUA etc.....

Its been done before. Plenty of info on Pirate off road BBS.

Easy way to make it WIDE!

Just for reference I have a picture here that shows my CJ5 on Waggy 44s (61" WMS) with 35/12.50/15 tires on 8 inch rims with about 3" bs. The black Jeep is a 7 on mid 70's J20 axles (67-68" WMS), 44 front and 60 ff rear with 42" TSLs (10 or 12" rims 3" bs to clear the brakes). Built widened frame mounts for the front axle (3" total IIRC) and did a SOA and it ended up BIG but the 401 pulled it around pretty well even with 3.73 gears. R)
And yes it was a little taller and wider than the cops in Washington liked, we out-waited cops a couple times who wanted to pull it over as soon as we drove out of the parking lot. My friend pulled it apart and sold it to fund a long arm kit and other parts for his TJ.
