Hey guys I know this has been covered somewhere but I also have a price question. I found a Dana 30 out of a 1979 CJ5. From what I've read, this is the narrow trac and will bolt up with no modifications correct? It is complete with disc brakes. The guy wants 50 bucks.
What ya'll think, should I get it?

    TIA :)

It most likely will need a re-gear but yeh sounds like a plan.

I'd say that's a good deal. Along with the re-gear you'll probably need caster shims with your lift, and you'll have to modify or get a new master cylinder to work with the disks - but IMHO it's worth the effort.

$50 is a steal. The only other thing I could think of besides the gear ratio is whetner or not it is setup for the 1 3/4" springs. But thats no big deal anyway. Also, it is about 2 1/2" wider than your rear. I bought 1 1/4" wheel spacers for my rear. Some people don't bother to space out the rears.

Good deal. As said you'll likely have to regear.

The spring perches will be too wide for your 1 3/4" springs, they are for 2" springs. They may interfere if you are using your original ubolt spring plate... you can grind 1/8" off of each side if they do... or if you use the D30 plates with the more narrow springs then you will have a gap between the ubolts and springs... not good. I've seen some guys tack weld some plates along the sides (plates tackwelded to the ubolt plate, not to the springs) to take up that space. If you use the later ubolt plate then your shock mount location will change, and you'll have to move your upper mounts, and probably some brake lines...

Nothing insurmountable... but things you should watch for/plan for before buying all the "go-with" parts...

Lynn the perches on my 77 dana 30 were the exact same as my dana 27 perches. Harry, check but I don't think this is a problem. The spring plates will be the way Lynn described though. Make new ones or deal with the old ones.

Thanks for the replies fellas. I sure do appreciate4 it. :) I'm gonna go pick it up Sat. Worse case I will already have it and can always take my time installing down the road. For 50 bucks it's a no brainer.

    You guy's are great!
