i need to put my jeep in hibernation for a couple years and was wanting to see what would be the best way to prep it for the long sleep. i was wondering if i should run it out of gas or just use stabilizer? and should i fog the engine seeing as how nobody will be able to start it every now and then? and then the axles, tranny & t/c? i do know i'm puttin it on jack stands to prevent flat spots on the tires. any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. thanks

There is a "proper" way to put a rig to sleep; mostly don't leave gas in the system, a teaspoon of oil in each cylinder, no battery connection, "dry" climate or good air circulation, jack stands and so on. Proper being a loose term, of course; it's just somebody's opinion. I didn't do it with my car when I was drafted, nor did I when I quit driving my JEEP, since that was a gradual decline of interest and I just left it sitting.

What is equally important is how you fire it up on the other end........

When you lay up a vehicle for a couple years the most damaging thing is the gas. As it sits the good stuff evaporates and you are left with crap, also much of todays gas has alcohol in it and it de-solves water into it. So the best thing you could do is run the tank near empty, add Stabil run it so it gets to the carb. Drain the gas in the tank, then run the engine till it stalls, during this time have some ATF ready and drizzle it into the carb as the eng is running to coat everything in oil just before it stalls (about 1/2 cup). This should remove as much gas as possible without teardown and coat all internals with ATF. You should change all the oils when warm,( eng, trans, xfr case, diff's), contaminates in oils will damage metal parts if left over time. Do a good chassis lube to make sure no water is present. Bleed brakes to clean fluid. Charge battery and leave in warm place, and if you can have a friend charge it a few times a year.
Do this and all you should have to do when your ready is add gas and hook up the battery and away you go!

hey thanks for the advise guys! i just didn't want to put it in storage the wrong way and damage things. the jeep will be in cold, dry storage in my barn with some cloth sheets over the entire jeep to keep off dust seeing as i live on a dirt road. i just hope the mice don't get in there and start chewing the wires or anything else for that matter. it's going to be hard getting the tranny and axels up to temp seeing as how it's snowing here and all the salt on the roads so i won't be driving the thing. guess i'll have to do it on the stands.

Laying it up for a couple years?

FWIW, we used chunks of Irish Spring soap throughout our motorhome when we stored it -- supposed to keep the mice out. And it smelled minty fresh in the spring...;)

Storing it in a barn, eh? Might also consider a ball bearing mousetrap, as I hear told, they are sometimes efficient at deterring intruders.

I don't have a problem with critters (I have a pair of rooftop rabbits:rofl:) but my friend has a big problem at his polebarn, he puts moth balls all over, He puts trays of them in his eng compartment and under his seats. He swears by it, the smell bothers me so I guess it would bother mice.

yeah boyink i have some things to take care of with family out of state and don't want to drive the cj there as it would cost alot of money to get there and drive it around is not practical. so i'll just put it in hibernation for a while. i never drive it in the winter anyways the road salt here is terrible on cars even more so with jeeps!
