What will it take to swap a 304 into a '74 CJ-5 that came with a 258 six? It has a T-14 transmission in it, will a 304 bolt up to it? I found a good running 304 out of a '74 Pacer for $250, but I want to know what it takes to put it in my jeep before I buy it.

    Thanks......Wil.

Never did the swap but I know you will have to change at least one motor mount frame horn. Others will fill you in shortly.

Hi - I think we've covered this before, but I searched and didn't find anything specific. IIRC you need to change the right motor mount (?) - plus I expect that the location of the drivetrain changes between the I6 and V8, ie transmission crossmember location and driveshaft lengths. In this case, I'd think you'd leave the transmission location alone, and move the engine mounts so that the V8 sits in the same location as the 258 did. I think Jeep did the opposite though - kept the motor mounts in one location and moved the crossmember.

The AMC V8 and I6 have the same bellhousing pattern, so the V8 will bolt right up to the T-14. However, the 72-75 V8 CJs came with the T-15, not the T-14, because the T-14 isn't strong enough for the V8. If you were to keep the T-14 and get the V8, the T-14 were in good shape, and you have conservative driving habits, the T-14 should last a long time.

What they said. Don't forget exhaust, cooling, possible throttle linkage changes, maybe some wiring changes, etc.
I have a set of factory V-8 frame mounts from a '75 if interested. They are glass beaded and painted black. $20 plus shipping from Portland, OR takes them. Nickmil.
