Should be. The 2 different lengths are all I've ever seen discussed.

So will the 8.5" F-head CJ clutch disc spline onto it or not?

  4. Glenn

Glenn Kinda grumpy old man Staff Member

No. Bigger outside diameter on the splined area.

Wonderful! Guess I need to go back and do some more head scratchin'...unless you or someone else can recommend an 8.5" disc from another application that could be used.

IIRC there was one for a vega or astro van that was 8.5 and was correct spline, also 2.5 iron duke motor. Don't hold me to this but I think that's what I remember I found out while looking for something else. Might be worth a look.

It looks as though I might be able to use the short shaft T90 after all! :)

My only concern is, will this slave cylinder interfere? :?

Maybe I'm not understanding something but I don't see how that would work at all.

Well, I was going to have a custom adapter made up to adapt that bellhousing to the T90. Problem is now with the short shaft I'm concerend that the slave cylinder is gonna hit the side of the case.

Looks like you are going to have to 'outboard' the slave cylinder as part of the tranny/bellhousing adaptor.

Not quite sure what you mean by that Steve. Can you enlighten me?

    Thanks,

Put the slave cylinder on the outside of the bellhousing instead of inside the bellhousing. I'm gonna assume this thing originally used a hydraulic throw out bearing, and you will have to mount a slave cylinder similar to this unit on the outside of the bellhousing.

But I thought that the slave cylinder already was mounted externally? :? :? :?

I wouldn't be above using a hydraulic throwout bearing either, if one of the correct diameter is available.

The idea Don is to move the slave cylinder outward so that it doen't interfere with the tranny mating to the bellhousing. Looking at the bellhousing from the tranny mating surface, simply drop the T-90 into the hole and see how much it needs to be moved, and then fab up a mount that moves the slave cylinder that far, plus a little bit.

First item of business is to get the tranny to bolt up to the bellhousing though...

OK, I'm dumb. I can't see how the salve cylinder could be moved out of its stock location and still be able to actuate the fork? :?

I don't have the tranny in my posession (yet!). I guess I need to call our resident machinist into action. 8) Hey Mcruff, should I just send you both of these bellhousings? Do you have access to a T90 case down there?

    Thanks again,
    Don

I figured you planned on an adapter, but silly me didn't realize that was the slave cylinder you had shown. I thought it was part of some weird t/o bearing assembly.

From a crude measurement I can make on my screen, it looks like the center rod of the RHD slave cyl placement will clear the T-90 flange. I measured the distance from the center of the M38A1 bell to the shadow of the transmission flange on the right, then compared that to the footprint of the slave cylinder. The T90 flange should be symmetric - thus the pushrod for the slave cyl should clear on the left too. There's clearly not enough room to mount the slave cylinder in the stock location on the MB bell, and that clearing the T90 flange. However, you may be able to move the slave cylinder backwards and mount it next to the case of the T90, and extending the rod somehow.

As you noted at the top, you have plenty of stickout to use the MB bell and a plate adapter.

    Ok, here's a picture of the T-90

Looks like the case sticks out past the flange. Bummer. You still may have a chance on the right side.

    You sure that's a T90 bell? Flange looks too big for a T90 ... T98?

I was *told* that it came out of an M38a1, but if someone more knowledgeable here on the board wants to tell me otherwise, I'll believe them.
