Holes in rotors of race cars allow hot gasses to escape, on a street car the difference is negligible at best from my understanding.

Holes in a drum allow water to escape the drum, I'm guessing it does the same thing with gasses too since the drum is a more enclosed space than a disk brake and is not vented like most rotors are.

My boy recently told me that when he used to drive Shaggy through a stream, he would lightly press on the brake pedal to keep the water out of the drums. Seemed to work for him, but I'm still going to drill the 11 inchers 'cause it looks cool and should work better. Ron, Further up this thread you suggested attaching an electric drill to my toolpost. That would work except the drums are too large (by 1/4") to fit my chuck. They hit the ways so I can't clamp them up. I'll keep looking into it and let you know how I finally solve the problem.

Tommy, did you see the pic of the jig I made to hold 2 drums back to back, and set up under a drill press?

I still think Billy's Bridgeport method is the ticket :)

I used to ride my brakes for awhile after a water crossing. It would dry them out somewhat, but not great.
The drilled drums are great :)

No, I missed it. Can you direct me to the posting that shows it? Thanks. I'm looking to build a jig to use my drill press as my lathe is too small.

    Lynn,

Thanks. The picture helps a lot. The Topping site sure does a good job of explaining the benefits of drum drilling. Now I have to figure out how to design a template (angled metal) for laying out my particular hole pattern.

measure the circumferance of the drum where you want the holes. lay out a piece of masking tape on a clean counter in the kitchen. mark of the number of evenly spaced holes you want on one edge of the tape. wrap the tape around the drum with the marks along the line where you want the holes. place your drums in the jig. start drillin

what i'm gonna do when i drill mine is do what is said above, but center punch all the holes first, then double and triple check to make sure they are all evenly spaced.

I center punched all of mine.
The exact spacing isn't critical to the 3rd decimal place... i'd estimate tolerance on spacing is probably ok within 1/8"... the key is to not change the balance of the drum too much.
Mine was off a bit on each drum, I just split the difference on the last 2 holes. Had a minor vibe for awhile ... might still be there but don't really notice it.

I drilled 1/8" holes. Billy did the same, and I believe Tommy said he's going with 1/8" as well.
