oh kewl. so i will have my passenger hook it up and i pull us out..=)
whch will be better, hooked to the dana 18 or the sm420
i think the pto on the tranny is on the side where all the 4x4 stuff is for the jeep. maybe the d18 will be better.

I'm PTO winch dreaming too. I've got a Dana 18H PTO and am thinking that I'll use it to run a hydrauilc pump to power a Mile Marker. To get around the safety issue the best idea seems to run a governor on the engine and use a remote control hydraulic valve. Pierce Sales makes several models for use on wreckers. That way you can use the governor to run the engine at a constant speed and be out front watching the winch cable. :JEEP:

Only with no load on the cable and only the weight of the cable being pulled.

Do any pics of PTO drives exist anywhere on here? if not, would someone be so kind as to post some for us less fortunate folks?

A lot cheaper way to go is with a Rubicon Springs hand throttle. I have one and as I recall they are only around $20 - 25 bucks. I use it to set engine idle at about 2000 rpms when I'm running the compressor or winch. It also works well on bumpy sections of road where your foot tries to bounce on the throttle a lot.

Here's a website that has an early Ramsey catalog.

Jeep used to offer a trencher option that I can't figure out how they get that much power off the PTO. Here's some interesting pictures:

There is also an option to power accessories off the front of the crankshaft, like a capstan winch.

Good points on safety. I have a PTO winch on my Jeep. What I usually do if I have to wind it by myself, is I will either wind it close and make the last couple wraps manually or I have found that putting the transmission in neutral and leaving everything else engaged will still spin the PTO driveshaft. It's enough to wind the cable, but you can easily stop it by hand. A kill switch mounted near the winch might not be a bad idea either.

I would say mount it to the D18. If you do that, you will have as many speeds as the transmission has for winching. For a SM 420, that's 4 speeds forward and 1 reverse. If you use the PTO on the tranny, you will only have one forward speed and no reverse unless you buy a reversible PTO adapter. There are times when you need reverse to take tension off the cable. if you don't have a way to do that, the only way will be to spin the shaft by hand. Not sure how hard that would be with the winch under tension.

    nickmil In mothballs.

Hook to the 18 transfer case. That will give you as many gears (speeds) as are in the transmission to drive the winch including reverse. If you run off the SM-420 you will have one speed in only, no reverse, as the Pto units run off the counter gear, unless you come across one of the pretty rare reversible units. There are adapters out there that allow you to run your PTO behind the Overdrive so you can have both. Herm sells new ones. Nickmil.

That is an awesome idea, that will be my next project. I'll use a guarded switch!!!!
