I recently purchased a 1961 CJ5 at an estate auction. The owner was deceased & the Jeep was sitting in a shed for 20 years, so I have no history on the vehical. The engine in this CJ5 is a 364 ci Buick V8 which was manufactured between 1957-58. To have this engine rebuilt or remanufactured is $2200.00 plus.

I would like to replace this engine with one I can drop in and mate with the existing transmission & motor mounts. What engine would be the most economical, readily available & easiest to drop in?
    Thanks

    Welcome from western PA!

If I am correct in this (and that is really a stretch at times!) your Jeep probably has a T-90 transmission in it (stock) but it most likely has had a longer input shaft installed in it from a 6-cylinder (L-226) engine in order to have enough length to make the adaptor/bellhousing setup work.

I think your first step is to identify what tranny is in it, as well as the xfercase, and then try to identify the adaptor used to mate the Buick engine up to that tranny. Once you know what you have, you'll be in a better position to know which way to go from there.

If indeed you have the longer input shaft, then I'd think that a logical upgrade path would be a Buick V-6, or a Buick 350 V-8. Not sure on what will bolt up, I'm sure someone else will chime in here on that.

Has your Jeep had any other upgrades, such as bigger brakes, Saginaw steering upgrades, etc?

Oh, and we like pictures here ! :D

Where did you come up with the price to have this engine rebuilt?
I think it would be super cool to have a Buick nailhead in my Jeep, these were awesome motors and made gobs of lowend grunt. If this price was for somebody else to build the motor thats not far off from any other motor. they wanted $1600+ to rebuild my Dauntless motor and they wouldn't let me substitute any parts. I did the rebuild myself and paid to have the machine work done. I got quite a few aftermarket parts and way more done than the other company would do for the $1600 and I saved about $250 in the process by doing it myself.
    Something to consider!
Would love to see pictures of this rig especially the engine!!!!!!!!!!!!!;)

    Welcome from Boston!

Why do you think the engine needs to be rebuilt? Does it run now?

Just because it's old or hasn't run in a while, doesn't mean it needs a rebuild.

I can't imagine a CJ-5 with a nail head Buick in it. That must be fast. Too fast for me. Oh yeah, has anyone said we like pictures.
