I'm afraid it's involving 1st &/or 3rd, but not sure. It's of a T-86 (V6). There's a gear (cluster gear?) sorta hidden there in the bottom that has some chipped teeth. It's the gear just distal to reverse. Sooo...what gear are the arrows pointing to, and what will I likely notice performancewise when I install this?

A new cluster gear is spendy....I opted to put the guts of a spare T90 I had into the T86 case. Mine grumbled pretty badly when in 1st/Rev with a similar ailment.

Randy's R&P has an article about grinding chips off of ring gears. I wonder if it would be useful or effective to grind the chipped teeth smooth and polish them?

not knocking Tim or Randys R-P
but if it's bad enough to warrant a teardown, then it's bad enough to replace, not polish
    IMO of course :D

I have done this on machinery at work to make it useable until a new part can arrive or we can get it made.
But like Jim said if it warrants a teardown then it should be replaced asap.

I'm glad I can read medical speak. "distal" If I didn't know what words like proximal, lateral medial, etc. mean, I would not have known what gear you are talking about.

Anyway, I have seen some new T86 stuff for sale on ebay lately. I just looked and didn't see a cluster gear though. I had been looking for T90 stuff for a while before I bought gears from you.
