Welp, Old Bill is dropping about 2 tablespoon's worth of gear oil out the weep hole in the bottom of the bell housing after every drive. Not as bad as some, I know, but still not real pleasing knowing I had just rebuilt the dang thing just under a year ago.

When I rebuilt the T90, I used a sealed bearing and filled in the return hole as per Rick Stiver's guide, but unfortunately, I have to suspect that this didn't work out like I had planned. I probably didn't use enough aviation sealer around the bearing. Sighhhhhh. :(

Anyway, I plan to pull the tranny/Xfer as a unit, and see what I can do with the front of that T90 to get just a tiny bit closer to my dream of a leak-free Jeep. I'm just hoping that I don't have to take the top half of the tranny apart just to seal it up....

    So, dear readers, I ask.....

Is it possible to remove/install the clutch fork and spring through the inspection hole, thus allowing me to simply slide the tranny back off of the bellhousing, or am I in for a difficult time dealing with the bellhousing/tranny/xfer as a unit?

    TIA!

Sorry Thad, I'm no help, but what is this "Rick Stiver's guide" of which you speak? Sounds like something I should know about.

You should be able to just slide the tranny out of the bellhousing, leaving the clutch, etc in the bellhousing.

Gotta back off the clutch adjustment and remove the fork first! ;)

The absolute best way is to let someone else do it while you watch and drink beer. R) :hurrican: Sorry if I'm no help.

    Reading my mind Jeff!

I truly love working on my Jeep, but pulling the tranny/xfercase unit is one job that I absolutely hate doing.

Can that be done through the inspection cover easily enough? I ran into the fork problem when I originally took it out of the Jeep. Just looking for ways to keep it simple. Leaving the bellhousing in place would really make it easier....

I want to be sure I understand as well. You can pull the tranny and tcase out without removing the bellhousing?

I've been told you can't. The reason I ask is, with the 350 in there, I can't split the bellhousing from the motor unless I pull the motor as well

Removing the tranny and tcase would be way easier for me to do by leaving the bell housing attached to the motor.

    What about re-assembly :?

Dennis, as per Steve's reply, I am thinking that you can pull the floor covers off, remove the inspection plate, remove the fork, then slide the tranny/xfer back out of the bellhousing. (not forgetting that you need to get the shifters out of the way, amongst other things....)

However, with your chebby, the bellhousing may be different. Bottom line is, if you can get the fork outta the way, you "should" be able to do it without removing the bellhousing. Reassembly is just the opposite. If you got it out, you can get it in. (Supposedly. )

Pulling it out doesn't worry me...it's puting it back together that does. Lining the clutch up, etc...

If I can do it that way, I may rebuild them this winter. If I have to yank everything, I'll wait until next fall...

Won't have to worry about that Dennis. The clutch disc stays in place while you pull the tranny out. The only worry you'll have is making sure the splines line up, and that's as simple as turning the output yoke a teeny bit.

Well, that's not to say it will be easy, just that you don't need to worry about the clutch disc. ;)

4 cyl I take it? Otherwise there isn't an inspection cover on a Buick bell.

My T-90 pee'd the same way after shut down. I rebuilt it last winter. It was not sealed correctly and the rtv came out causing ESD (exsessive shutdown drool) :D

Does he need to prop up the back of the engine somehow, to keep it from dropping down? Seems like that would be necessary to me.
