OK the choke stove on my 74 258 w/original carter YF is baffling me. The carb is sitting there with the choke and on the choke is a fitting where a steel tube connects. The steel tube is completely missing and if I put my finger over the fitting there is vacuum present. This fitting is where the steel tube from the original hot air/choke stove connected. Which is now missing.

Does anyone know where the tube from the carb goes? Does it wrap arround the exhaust manifold? Is it open to the air or is this a sealed system? Is this a vacuum leak if there is nothing attached? Basically I want to get the original style hot air choke system up and running but I do not know how it was originally set up. I know I can get a generic setup at the auto parts store so parts are not a problem. Can anyone help??? Thanks in advance.

The pipe was originally covered with a sort of woven asbestos loom so to speak. I am trying to do this from memory, I can look at mine tomorrow. There should be a hole or maybe a tube that runs vertically through the exhaust manifold.(look directly between carb and head for this)IIRC the tube extends all the way out the bottom of the exhaust manifold. The other (unthreaded end) of the fabric covered tube pokes into this hole. Sorry that's the best that I can describe it at this time, I can look tomorrow. I need to get a new digital camera.

That would be great if you could look. This is just really bothering me on all levels. Because of it the choke is not opening completely. Thanks

I checked it out there should be a hole through the exhaust manifold approx 1/2 inch towards the carb from the manifold gasket. It is actually a tube that extends all the way out the bottom of the manifold through the heat riser chamber. It is this tube that one end of the choke stove tube just shoves into the other end is threaded to the choke mechanism. The tube shouldn't be all that hard to find at any wrecking yard. Jeeps,IH and American motors/Ramblers all used them. You may also try www.americanpartsdepot.com, they may have NOS ones.

Thanks for all the help Cam. I don't mean to be a pain, but where exactly does the tube enter the exhaust manifold? You said 1/2 inch from the gasket, but on which valve? There is a hole on the right center exaust port, but it has a bolt in it blocking it off. Does anyone have a picture of what this should look like?? It is getting cold. Jeep does not like cold!!!

It should be right between cyl no. 3 & 4, between carb and valve cover. Should be right on top of manifold, not too hard to spot, if yours has one. Maybe you have a different year manifold or something. I will try to beg or borrow a digital camera in the next couple days.

Thanks, I think I saw it. I believe mine is blocked off. What type of fitting is present? Do you think I could get away with running some steel fuel line from the choke and screwing in a brass fuel fitting into the manifold and attaching the other end to it?

There's a "Help" kit with a universal replacemetn for the choke stove. Check the pegs at your FLAPS - instructions are included.
