This is probably a stupid question, but on a 74' is the gas pedal suppose to be really high in the air. The reason I ask is b/c when driving, I have to have my foot either arched really far back or my whole leg in the air without my heel touching the florrboard. It gets really uncomfortable and starts to cramp my leg. Any solutions to this. I was thinking of getting a longer pedal. I just got this jeep and am trying to work out all the bugs. Thx in advance for any ideas.:?

Maybe you could tweak the bracket that is bolted to the intake manifold that holds one end of the cable. If you were to bend it towards the carb a little it should help some.(Is the square part of the cable seated all the way into the square hole in the bracket, most likley is) You would want to make sure that you are still getting wide open throttle. I suppose that the pedal could be slightly bent also.

Here are the pics of the pedal and of the attachment to the card. Again, this is a 74' CJ5.

A couple of things come to mind. I will have to run out and look at mine tomorrow. I can see where the linkage was fabbed by someone when they installed a replacement carb. There may be room for more tweaking there. Second, I am not sure, I will have to look at mine but I wonder if the pedal rod was bent up and out slightly right above the pedal pad. Also check the cable inside above the pedal, I have seen where people "rigged" them with nuts, washers and even lead fishing weights to shorten the cable some. But what I think may help would be to drill some more holes in the homemade throttle lever extension to shorten the throw or arc that it travels in, thereby allowing less pedal travel (that will also make it more "touchy" or sensitive though.

from your pictures, the pedal appears to be right. mine is in the same position. the pedal itself should be able to pivot down, which would alleviate some of your discomfort. the carburetor attachments appear ok, and the location looks the same as my '75.

I wonder if it also has to do with the fact that I am 6'3" and these stock seats are made for people under 5'8".:) :) :) :) :) :) :)

I checked my gas pedal this morning it is 3 inches above the floor. I measured underneath the pedal from right next to where the pedal pad pivots. I don't know if this is of any help to you or not.

Cam, your post helped a ton!!! It gave me something to compare mine with. As you stated, yours was around 3inches or so off hte floor from the pivot point. Mine was reaching 5 inches from the floor!!!! I think each inch translates exponentially. Anyway, to do the adjustment I loosened the throttle arm on the carb. I increased the angle of it which in turn slackened the cable and allowed the pedal to drop to around 3 inches. The difference is huge. I can actually drive it with comfort now. I took some pics of what I did. As you can see (number 1 on pic), I created an arc to show the original angle vs. the new angle. However, it caused the throttle cable to curve upward(number 2 on pic). My former location of the throttle return spring was not adequate enough to cause the engine to return the idle. I relocated it to something, not sure what, to increase tension and it works fine. Does anyone see any problems with this setup, danger, un-safe, etc.... I kind of go with the adage of, if it works, then don't mess with it.
Thanks for all the advice and help. I really appreciate everyone.

until your next post, i was going to say "you got it" since i am 5-6. :)

which reminds me, that's why i got the jeep in the first place. the previous owner was 6-3, and he didn't like it. steering wheel was too big, and his knees were bumping it.

On mine there is a bracket sticking out from the manifold approx 3 inches that the spring hooks to so it pulls the cable down and away from the cable mount. The bracket is near where the heat riser is sticking out away from the engine. I hope this makes sense.

Well, If down and away is ok, then I would guess up and away is ok, too. I drove it around tonight and it did great. Now to find out why I have good oil pressure for the first 5 minutes then it drops to nil.
