I have a 68 CJ-5 with the F-Head 134 engine. It has a new Solex carb and has points ignition. Last I checked it had good compression...

It seems to skip (only sometimes) when it warms up almost like it has sucked up trash (or maybe it is misfiring?). Is there another reason it could be doing this? Any ideas?

This may be stupid, but how can I tell if it's sucked up trash? What would cause it to misfire? Always something...

    Thank ya'll again.

    Possibly vapor locking????
Check to be sure that your fuel line isn't near exhaust or any other source of heat.

    Just throwing that out there

Stupid question and I know I ask this every time someone has a fuel problem but is this the first tank with this problem? could it be water in your tank? I had this problem in the Neon not long ago, I ran the tank down to a half tank and filled up. Problem solved.

Check your fuel filter , simple but sometimes simple is the answer.

There is a good chance that you just described the problem yourself.

See if you can find a friend with a good running F head and borrow his YF carburetor for a couple of days.

Yeah, the Solex cost around a hundred bucks, and you'd hate to deep six it so soon, but that Carter YF, if rebuilt properly, is a pretty bulletproof carb.

A carter YF, if not rebuilt properly, is one of the biggest headaches you'll find.

Yeah, it could have water in the fuel tank (this is probably the problem). I try to drain the tank that holds 11 gallons (without crying - - $40 bucks worth --- ya' know.) I'll change the fuel filter also. I'll bet it is water in the tank. I filled it up the other day and didn't notice it at all. I ran it again yesterday and didn't notice it for a while - - then it warmed up, but realistically it probably is running low on fuel.

Yeah the timing could be off a bit. The fuel line is near a source of heat, but it has always been, at least since I got it. As far as the Solex carb, I say it's new, It's been on there for a few months with no jeep problem until recently. I'd be suprised if it were the carb, but then again what do I know... I'll try to eliminate the other stuff first.

I swear this thing must get 6 miles to the gallon... Anything to help this?

Thank ya'll again for the help. This is my "free Jeep". It looked pretty rough, probably still would to most of you, but it has came a long ways. We cleaned it up over the last few weeks and painted it this weekend. It "usually" runs excellent. I'll try to post some before and after pictures.

Animal used to have the same sputter.
Then after the rebuild the stutter was still there.
I found the lobes on the dist were uneven with one wore really bad. After I replaced it it still had the stutter.
I put the timing exactly at 5* and it went away

Is that vacuum advance? If so check any vacuum hoses for cracks.

Oh and one thing I have learned about the Solex is to let it get good and warm before adjusting

Nothin' wrong with a new Solex carb. I've tuned a few, they're easy to tune, just be sure to follow the directions that came with it and refer to this http://www.film.queensu.ca/CJ3B/Tech/SolexTips.html .

For most beginners the Solex is by far a better option IMO over the fussy YF that's probably worn out.

If you have the experience and/or patience a YF is an option but for most folks from what I've seen the Solex is an upgrade over the YF.

The Solex carbs are awesome. Best thing I'd done to the jeep in along time. The 40 year old YF was no comparison to the Solex. I'd go along with some of the other suggestions. Check your timing, check for air gaps at the carb base, did you use a new gasket? etc. Maybe a couple of cans of anti-water crap I can't remember what its called since I moved to California.

Solex is adjusted properly. I'll make sure of the fuel/water. I'll check the timing (HOW?).

As for vacuum hoses. I don't think there is a vaccum hose on the whole engine. There is one hole plugged just in front of the carb on top of the engine. There is one hose that runs from the PCV valve back to the block. They've been like this since I got the Jeep and again, I don't THINK this is a problem.... But I'll add em, subtract em, whatever, - if you tell me how...

Do you have to have a timing light to set the timing? How do I set the timing? My uncle has a timing light that I can borrow if I need it, but how do I do this?

    Thank ya'll again.

"Dry gas". It's mostly methyl alcohol, miscible with both fuel and H2O. The cheapest brand works fine.

I had a similar problem until I timed the Jeep (good and warm) and then used a vacuum gage to "fine tune" it. I adjusted it until I had the best vacuum reading. It runs like a champ now. Also, maybe your points and/or rotor/distributor need a good cleaning/replacement.??

Problem solved: Took it down to my uncles today and it wouldn't skip for anything... I rode around for a bit and sure enough it started. Took it back and he said it sounded like maybe the distributor cap needed to be replaced or had some condensation in it. Sprayed it with WD-40 and wah-la, all better.

It runs like a new machine again.

Thank ya'll for all of the help. I ya'll are ever in South Georgia I can put you on some ducks or bass fishing...
