    Hi All,
I'm rebuilding my 67 CJ and one of the projects I want to do is swap the 4.88's for 3.73's. It's going to be mostly a daily driver with some highway time. But I have a few concerns I'd like to run by you. First off I'm having trouble finding gears for the Dana 27, any ideas? And what is meant by the CARRIER SPLIT? Is this going to pose a problem for the swap? And will 3.73's bolt right up? And an off topic question, my vin# is 8305A2145.. My title says 67, but according to the chart on this site those are 66 numbers. Am I mistaken, or is my title wrong? Thanks for any help you guys can provide. I appreciate it!

there are two (2) different carriers due to gear thickness.

could. 3.73's WILL bolt up to the right carrier (3 series).

In my opinon, you would do better (and be cheaper) to switch to 4.27 or 4.10 for the ratio. the 4.10 will be the harder to find, as only the wagons and trucks used it in the dana 27.

If you off-road, I would keep the 4.88s and get an overdrive. That's what I run and it's great.

I am doing the same thing you are and I looked all over to find 3.73's, now I have several. If that is what you decide to do, send me an email and I will verify what I have has the spline count that you need.

    Thank,

    Jim

If you want to get rid of the 4.88's - just let me know. I love them with an OD.

I know there was a lot of overlapping of the production years during that time. My dad bought his current jeep new in 1967. A bunch of the parts on it are leftovers from 1966. I'll have to get his vin# and see what the chart says. I know this doesn't answer your question. Just an observation.
BTW, always take your original part with you when you go to the parts store for a replacement. You never know which year it is from and it sucks making a second trip because you got the wrong one.
