I bought a 67 CJ5 out of my local junkyard. Jeep was complete before I parted it out.

So I got the casting code off the engine, and it says I have a 1978 turbo, even fire, 231 engine? No turbo on jeep.... Casting was 1254083. Has 2-barrel carb, HEI, and EGR valve.

VIN says it is a non-smog v6, Dec of 67.

I am selling the engine, just trying to figure out what I have.

First time poster, thanks for any help!

Engine swaps are not uncommon. EF 231 drops right in.

    Welcome from KS!

    welcome
if you have time, fill out your profile so we know where you hail from,
might be a buddy right down the roaf from you !

a previous owner has swapped the engine for whatever the reason maybe.
you could put another 231 or stock 225 back in it, your choice of course.

1254083 is a 1977 non-turbo motor (1978 turbo was 1261438 ). Mid year 1977 changed from Odd to even fire. Wierd spaced distributor cap terminals will indicate odd-fire.

Based on our Casting Information in EarlyCJ5 tech - http://www.earlycj5.com/tech/engines/225/castingNumbers.shtml

Your block could have been used in several applications - '78 Evenfire, '78 Evenfire Turbo, '77 Evenfire or '77 Oddfire. Our information was compiled from a Vintage American Engine Rebuilders Association Interchange Guide.

    1978 231 3.8 3.80 3.40 V6, Even-Fire, Turbo Charged, Crank may have 5/8" or 3/4" Pulley Bolt Hole

    1978-77 231 3.8 3.80 3.40 V6, Even-Fire, Split Rod Pin Crank, Even Fire Engine

    1977 231 3.8 3.80 3.40 V6, Even-Fire, Straight Rod Pin Crank, Odd Fire Engine w/ Integrated Dist. Drive

It's should have a stronger bottom end than earlier engines and you might (I stress might here) be able to use the later high-port evenfire head's with little or no machine work required. According to Pat Ganahal in the V6 Performance Book the later heads flowed much better than earlier designs.

Ok, then I have an even fire, the spark wires are evenly spaced. I need to check oil pressure, and compression, see if the engine is good. Then I will put on ebay.

I know of one yard that is jeep yard, was there probaly 10 years ago. He had a bunch of engines and axles, mostly 4 cly stuff. Name was Charles Miller, and was just off route 30, east of Mansfield. Just a guy with some stuff, not an actual yard. I don't know if he is still there or not, and doubt I could find my way back. Anyone have more current info?

Yep I was at the rally, my old 2A showed up a bunch of wranglers. Was a good time. The engine is doing some tipping and tapping thou, all those years of low oil pressure are showing.

Stretch - all HEI caps have the wires evenly spaced. You need to look at the lobes inside on the pickups. Look at the tech article on how to convert from even to odd fire HEI's.

Thanks Warloch... I forgot he had an HEI. Those have an interesting pickup design on the under side of the cap ;)

Took off the cap and took a pic, and drew some lines from where the contacts where firing. Looks to be odd-fire.

If I am thinking correctly, this makes it the latest and best of the odd-fires?

Looks right, but I prefer to verify with the pickups... This article on a Odd Fire Convert will show you pickups on the Distro.

Ok, I pulled the rotor cap and was able to look under the weights. The pickup is an odd-fire.

Thanks for all the help in identifying this motor.
