    Dan,
Me too. I've read where it isn't a good idea, but I feel safer with the 3 point belts than with just the lap belts. Don't really feel like eating the steering wheel if something should happen. Of course I'm still riding around sitting on the gas tank.....

yeah, I've always felt it would be much safer for the gas tank to explode 2 feet away as opposed to underneath me:shock:

Sorry, but IMO, there is nothing wrong with the underseat tank, as long as it doesn't leak..... Maybe only because after 8 years and 45K miles, many trail miles, I haven't had a problem.....

I'dworry more about the steering column than the underseat gas tank. Any explosion from the gas tank will be big enough I'm guessing that it won't matter where the tank is located if it comes down to that...

whatt... you don't like the stering box that comes right up next to the front bumper with a non compressible shaft coming right out to an area that many people find difficult to squeeze into?? having that hollow tube sticking out there just adds to the fun...

seriously, i've come to the conclusion that ant wreck in the cj will be a life changing event. i'm just making improvements so that it doesn't become that much more life changing, and the three point belts with the lowback was one of them.

Front bumper?? I'd be more concerned with the Ross with the column that goes into the box on the frame....

should be easy Dan to find the belts, mounting them might be the challenge.

I've seen a lot of rolled Jeeps; haven't seen one that the driver was impaled on..........................that doesn't mean that it hasn't happened
would have to be a freak accident IMO

actually, that's once of the reasons i went with the cherokee column (it's collapsable) and the telescoping borg intermediate shaft and then made sure that there was an angle between the intermediate and the column as per borgeson's and aa's design guides.

course a front end meetup with the steering column in a cj5 is gonna hurt no matter what..

shoulder restraints sound like a good idea to me.

i was thinking more of hitting something with the front end the way people seem to pull out in front of me around here, and i know that front is going to crumple a little bit. the only question is whether or not i built enough angle in the shaft going to the sagi swap to make it pivot instead of coming up to meet me. only time will tell, but i'd rather leave it in the gray area for as long as possible.

I T-Boned a Dodge Charger (years ago when they were still BIG cars) - with the way I redo the front of my jeeps I drove away, they didn't ('course the cuffs on them for DUI didn't help there either).

I put a slip shaft in my jeeps more for the ease of installation and work later than any safety concerns.

The key to the shoulder belt is to keep it up high enough to not compress the spine if your thrown forward, but not so high as to be able to slip out easily. Personally, I like a 4 point in a jeep as you can get tossed multiple directions.

OK, I'm ready for some seat belts with shoulder straps, Where do you get them with the necessary mounting hardware to mount on a 66 CJ5 that only came with lap belts?

i was thinknig bout getting mine here

    http://www.gotbelts.com/

they seem comeplete and competative in prices. For a over the shoulder belt with retractable belt is $79 for one person. I know you can get them used, but i would rather get it new and do it right.

I bought a set of 4 TJ belts off eBay for ~125.00. Used, yea - I think they were from an '01 model so four years old. I figured I'd buy an '01 TJ, hop in and use the seatbelts w/o thinking twice about it...and just couldn't beat the price. Some pics of the mounting are here.

So far I really like them.
