I have a 1982 Jeep CJ-5 with a T-176/177 transmission. The shifter on it keeps slipping out of gear. My mechanic guy says there is supposed to be some kind of bushing that fits over the end of the shifter.

Can anyone here give me the heads-up as to this part, where to find it or how to make one.
    Thanks

Sounds more like the synchronizers in the tranny are shot.

The Shifter slips out of the slots... it does not jump out of gear.

    Does this help.

When the shifter slips out, then the trany stays in 4th gear and I have to take the shifter out and realign everything.

    Thanks

Often the shift forks wear in the T176 series. Wait until you go to put it in reverse and the shifter just locks up!! You CAN"t move it, and you can't go (stuck in 2 gears at once)

When this happens, you'll need to remove the top cover, 12 bolts I think, and remove the cover/shifter assembly. Move the sliding gears back into place (neutral) with a screwdriver, then move the shifter/forks to line up with the sliding gears, then put the top back on. Don't worry, it will happen progressively more often...
The cure is new shift forks. 4WDH has them, as do other places.

4WDH probably has the shifter bushing as well, although I'm not sure that's really the issue. You may need shift rail poppet balls/springs.

Go here, then zoom in on the exploded diagram.

thus might be a more detailed pic
I'll bet it's #14 shift lug, and the pins #9, and also the tower too.
The taper of the tower that the shift lever ball fits into can mushroom over time.
I had to replace these items on my 81 J10 right at 100K miles; the forks looked new FWIW

Look at the #6 spring and the I think #9 pins. The pins get loose in the tower allowing the shifter to move upwards slightly and not allow full throw of the stick to allow the fork to move far enough allowing it to come back out of gear. The spring will do the same thing. Also check the poppet springs for the detent balls. Common for those to collapse over time. Check the other items that have been mentioned as well. Nickmil.
