First off hello, I have been looking around on this site for a couple of weeks and it seems to be a great bunch of guys who love jeeps and like to help other guys who like jeeps .I bought a 1965 cj5 with 225 v6 off ebay a few weeks ago and I am trying to figure a few things out. I am trying to figure out if my v6 is factory or aftermarket swap, there seems to be conflict on when the 225 started 65 or 66 were thier some late 65s does anyone know if there is somewhere where I can find a start date serial # for the 225.
Also there are three sets of numbers on the axle tags one is the ratio what are the other two? Thanks Steve

Numbers don't lie. Bellhousing shapes don't either.

There's a bellhousing guide in the tech section for the V6s.

    I've got a '69 with a 198 that's got a rod knock. :(

    Sparky,
Based on your experience with the 198 ( aside from the rod knock) would I be better off finding a 225 to rebuild or stick with the 198 and rebuild it. Would there be more available parts for the 225 than the 198.
I am doing a complete frame up resto.
    Thanks Steve

Although I have not driven a 198, I think either would perfrom fine. Parts for the 225 will be much easier. the old 'fireball' was only made for what, 3 years? Sparky had a hard time locating a starter for his 198, and it cost 2X as much as a 225.

No, it wasn't factory until '66.

Parts are more difficult to find for a 198. And as MOP noted more $$$$$.

If yours is in good shape run with it. If you need parts I have some available. ;)

A 225/231 will be cheaper to run in the long run by far. With the proper bellhousing on the transmission (not hard to find here) you'd be better off with a 225 or 231 IMO if you want cheap.

You do have another option, an aluminum 215 V8 which is what the 198 is based on. Same bellhousing pattern and brackets are the same. There was a complete one for sale in KS recently that didn't even sell with less than 50k miles IIRC.

I just did a search on 198 and did a lot of reading, for the extent of a restore I am planning I dont think the 198 would be the best choice so it looks like I will be looking for a rebuildable 225 and bell housing. Ill post on parts wanted also I guess Ill post my 198 which by the way is in good running order. Thanks guys Im sure ill be asking more questions.

Before you discard the 198, you might check the compression and oil pressure. If you have an engine in good condition... staging your frame-up might be more sensible. After a couple years of every afternoon and weekend, you might get impatient to have it running again. Plus, hobby cars (like Jeeps) don't accumulate a lot of miles like everyday drivers, so a good used engine could last many years.

In any event, knowing the compression and oil pressure before you replace the engine will make it easier to sell later.
