I am at my wits end with my clutch cable on my 1971 CJ5 Renagade 2. Is

    Welcome from So California !
it could be that a stiff/race type pressure plate could cause this problem.
It could also be the quality of the replacement cable I suppose.
FYI I run the same cable on my Jeep; stock V6 clutch; cable has been on for over 20 years (but my cable came from Jeep before they were disc)

    Hello coach from Ohio. :)

I've had similar surprises from recent changes to my '71 V6 clutch system. The ferrull seemed to pop off the end of the cable rather easily & often which REALLY made me mad.

Be certain the fork is new & true and that the pivot spring is in its proper spot. There can be some variation in the fork's travel about its perch (the part that you could grab and move up/down). Make sure its home is located in the center of the p.plate or you'll have ferrull's popping off like the 4th of July! :flag:

    Search on user name "goober".
He got a heavy-duty cable made for his, and I think he posted the source awhile back.

I'm surprised no one mentioned this - Advance Adaptors chain clutch linkage. You'll never look back (and you'll never drive home trying to grind your way through the gears b/c the cable broke AGAIN!).

I had the cable and it seemed to stretch. After driving the Jeep for a while (20 or 30 mintues), it would no longer engage the clutch. Getting back in gear at a traffic light involved lots of profanity, gear grinding, and gawking from onlookers.

Then, the inevitable happended - I pressed the clutch one day, and BAM!!!, the pedal went to the floor. I knew what had happened... I limped back home and started looking at the AA chain linkage. Once installed, I have no more problems getting in gear, no worries about it breaking, and I'm told it will eliminate the problems with frame flex causing you to loose your clutch on twisty trails (I didn't really have that problem before, so I can't comment).

Do a search for "chain clutch" and you'll get a lot of info. If you don't want to shell out the $125 for the AA unit, there are instructions for making your own if you're handy in the garage.

Not sure if this design is better or worse than the AA chain linkage but my old '69 didn't have a cable. It had a piece of all thread rod. Never gave me a minutes trouble.

Jeepsters were well known and documented for clutch cable/linkage problems from day one.
My clutch and 1 piece cable/bracket components are factory stock Jeep ( read: not aftermarket)
I can reach in with my hand and easily push the clutch pedal all the way to the floor; no straining, lurching, holding my breath etc etc.......
Mine is easier than the one or two hydraulic set-ups I have pushed with my leg.
it's my opinion all the "hard to push" clutch comments arise after installation of HD/race press plates.
