    Ok here is the deal: I put in 4 litres of water and 4 litres of antifreeze in my radiator. That gives a 50% mix. Because it gets damn cold up here I want to get this to a 60% antifreeze 40% water mix so here is my reasoning:

    If I add 2 litres of antifreeze I get the correct ratio because (6 litres of antifreeze)/(10 litres of liquid) = 0.6, where 10 litres = 6 litres of antifreeze + 4 litres of water. Is this correct?

    Yeah I know its metric, but I cant think in terms of gallons and metric is easier than thinking in terms of furlongs per gallon...

    your cooling system should have 13 qts US capacity, including for the heater.
    this converts to 11.6 qts Imp
    my calcs indicate 7.8 US qts coolant for 60% ratio
    disclaimer: my calcs are iffy sometimes
    never have learned metric

    I would recommend staying with a 50/50 mix. Its not good on stuff when you run a stronger mixture plus it doesn't help all that much. You will cause more problems than help. Inless your temps dip below -34 F or -36.7 C its not the best thing to do. But of course these are old engines that can probably can handle this stuff. I know your in canada and i'm not sure how low your temps go.

    It gets cold. I have seen temps as low as -40C (-40F). But that does not happen too often. I am just worried about blowing a freeze plug.

    7.8 quarts works out to be 7.3 litres. So, to be conservative, I will put in 7 litres of antifreeze, that is add 3 litres of antifreeze, and the make up the balance with water.

    Thanks gents.

    you could also pick up a small pocket sized tester and test the mixture;
    that will indicate level of protection

    Timgr,

    I build 3d geomodels of oil reservoirs for a living. A colleague of mine and I were talking and were wishing that more people could think in 3d as it would make our job easier. He then piped up and said thats how Kirk caught Kahn. Spock says "He is intelligent, and strategic, but he thinks in 2d..." Thats when Kirk drops the enterprise waits for Kahn to glide over top and then pops up behind him and blasts him. The other day I had a meeting with a non-3der and thought that this avatar would be a cool idea.

    Kahn! Kahn!

    Yeah, I dont own one of those testers. They are cheap. I will get one today.
