I've always wondered why I never see or read about the 292 being swapped into CJ's. I woud think it would be a good replacement for the 258. My brother had one in his Chevy pick up and it had lots of grunt on the low end and could really lug. The makings of a good Jeep engine, I would think. Is it any heavier than the 258?

Probably not maybe even a little lighter than the Rambler six the 194-250 were always considerered to be. Used to be lots of stuff ot there for chevy six also. Folks just seem to do the eight. I like the chevy six idea.

I've wondered about that too. The 292 was the base engine for the 3/4-ton Chebbys for a few years, they were really torque monsters! Lots of speed parts for them too. ;)

Depending on year, some of the 292's would make 170 HP and 285 ft. lb. of torque at 1600 RPM. That's gross HP and torque, of course.

why not a chevy 6? Because most people think that 8 cyl is the only way.

Don't know a lot specifically about the 292, but the bits and pieces I've read and heard all say it's a dog. I expect it was an effort to compete with the very successful Ford 300 - mostly driven by marketing as opposed to some real technical advantage. I've read in several places that it uniformly gets lousy gas mileage - never better than the 307, which has a similar displacement and was offered concurrently. The Chevy 250 is a more popular engine, having more parts available and a stronger bottom end.

From my POV, there's just not enough different about the 292, compared to the 258, to make a swap worthwhile. 292 - 258 = 34 cid difference ... not a lot. The 258 is well known as a very long lived and reliable engine, and fairly economical. Lots of issues to deal with installing a non-stock, or out-of-family engine... All these long-stroke inline 6s (250, 258, 292, 300) have lots of torque at low RPM - of the group, I'd probably choose the 292 last.

I have seen one nice easy out of family swap.. A jeep with the t-18 is an easy swap for a ford 300 backed by a ford t-18.. kind of a bolt in there with some motor mount mods..

from my experince with the 250 they seem to last for years one of mine sat in a field for 10 years or so and it ran fine with some gas poured down the carb

The 292 Chevy was never intended to be an 'economy' engine, it was only available in the 3/4-ton chassis which also had the steeper gearsets. The big six really shone as a low-rpm work truck, as did the AMC six. The coolness factor aside, if you are going to do an engine swap in an intermediate, the Chevy V-8 is prolly the way to go. It's just that this is a swap that has been done over and over, the six just offers a uniqueness factor that isn't seen very much these days. YMMV.

    I was always impressed with the 305 & 351 V6 engines. Propelled a friend's 1966 Suburban pretty well! Bolt two 351's together for a 702!

    How about the little known 1960's 7.1L 478 V-6? 235HP and 440FT

Must have had coffee can sized pistons!! I think it was part of the GMC Truck 305 V6 family in the 60's 8)

Those were odd-fire engines too, weren't they?

Actually, my brother had a 64 1/2 ton Chevy long bed with the 292. If I remember correctly, the engine had a single barrel carb and got about 18 mpg on the highway. He lived in Corvallis, OR and gas wars would bring the price of fuel down to 22 cents a gallon!

Seems kinda pointless to replace one 6cyl with another 6cyl engine. If your gonna go to all that trouble might as well go V8 or at least go for a short V6 to accomodate a longer drivetrain.

But, if you like it go for it!

Those big six's are a blast from the past. I used to drive a early sixties six wheel dump that had a six. truck was beat but still running into the 90's. two speed rear end what torq. I wish I could remmember the displacement on it.
