  2. Holley Model 2300 500 cfm 2 barrel, bigger is always better!

  3. Weber REDLINE Kit K550 32/36 DGEV 350 cfm 2 barrel... sure, it's more expensive but it's a Weber.

  4. Remanufactured stock Carter... they're great carburetors that are under-rated.

    Hey all,
well, the carter YF on my '74 258 finally died. So now it's time to buy a new carburetor, and I'd love to hear from all you guys that have already thrown your carter YF's as far away as possible

    Thanks....Wil.

    350 is closer to what a 258 needs than a 500 CFM.

Umm I could not vote. :(
I say Clifford or Offy 4 barrel intake with a small 4 barrel. ;)
To quote you more is better. :D

Has anyone else run the Holley? I'm afraid that since it's a street carb it might slosh gas and flood out like the carter did... Unfortunately $600 for the Offy intake and a 4 barrel isn't an option for me right now, I'm off to college next week and I'm trying to save as much money as possible. In all reality I probably should sell the Jeep and buy a fume sniffing Honda but I prefer my deluded version of reality ;)

IMO don't go the 4V carb and manifold - at that price, you are most of the way to a turnkey kit for throttle body fuel injection.

Carburetors are crude, fiddly devices - go fuel injection if you can. FI is more reliable than carburetion, just with different technology, plus being vastly better for performance and economy. Plus, there's no float bowl, so you could put your Jeep in any position or shake it like a rag doll and it'll keep running smoothly.

If you can install with the later 2-barrel manifold, then a Motorcraft 2100 would be a good bet, proven to run well offroad. LOTS of info available, most of it relates to swapping out the later Carter BBD in favor of the 2100 (1.08 version).

But as Tim said... FI is the ticket :D

Harry and I just exchanged e-mails on this. He couldn't find a 1.08 version.

Got a 1.21 instead after several failed attempts at a 1.08. Here's what his last e-mail said, I hope he doesn't mind and sees this and chimes in.

In that case, you're better off to either rebuild the YF or have it rebuilt. It's a nice, boring, reliable carburetor that will respond well to a good cleaning and new gaskets.

Sparky, I've heard of guys who have run the 1.21 with success as well... but I didn't know about running the hotter plug. I sent Frank a bunch of info I collected off the net on this swap but it didn't mention this. Good info, hope it works out well for Frank.

Wil, a later intake should be easy to find... but I don't know about the fit-up to your earlier engine...
...if you give me your email I'll send you the document I have... a collection of forum posts from different sources discussing the pros and cons of the 2100, it's good reading.

I have the 1.08" carb on my truck. It came from a '79 Cherokee 360. If you can't find one in a junkyard, somebody on the IFSJA board might sell you one http://www.ifsja.org/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi

I have one from an early 70s Ford van that I got at the Rialto pick-your-part. It's been rebuilt, but it's missing the little plastic piece that connects the choke rod to the choke plate. Maybe it's a Ford part - don't know... not the same as the part that Pony Carbs sells. If somebody really wants it, we can strike a deal.

It's been my experience that there are plenty of these carburetors available in the junk yards in Southern CA. I haven't spent much time there lately... but I assume that hasn't changed in the past couple of years. I suspect that anyone in the sun belt or the south should easily be able to find one.

I've already tried rebuilding mine... unfortunately it's missing the fuel bowl baffle and gas sloshes out of the carb through the accelerator pump and into the venturi, flooding it out. I literally can't go down a gravel road at 5 mph without it dying. My main problem with buying a remanufactured carb, is I don't trust it to have the baffle in it. I bought a reman. YFA for a 1982 Bronco that was missing parts, and nobody in town has any YFs in stock... they all said they'd have to go through their distributers which would take a week to get here and even then they want my money before they'll order it.

Oh and I have tried to find the baffle without any luck. I've looked online and also tried asking auto parts stores about it, most of them don't even know what a baffle is

    Hey,
well, I decided to get the stock carb rebuilt. I found a guy that actually knew what a fuel bowl baffle was! It runs great now... I still plan to put a different carburetor on it, but with trying to pay for college it's gonna have to wait

    Thanks.....Wil
